• help wiring fans

I recently moved my hp over to a real case. I have everything hooked up correctly, and turn it on for the first time. I get an error. "THE SYSTEM FAN HAS MALFUNCTIONED". I can fix the error by plugging in the old rear exhausted fan from the HP case. One problem though. The fan isn't the right size to put anywhere in the new case. All of the fans except the CPU fan have the 4-pin molex connector, while the old fan has a three pin connector that looks like the CPU one. Since I cant boot without the three-pin connected, can I put the three-pin connector one of the red/black fans I already have? What does the third wire even do? Its yellow. Do I just put the red/black wires of the normal fan into the connector and ignore the third wire, or do I need to buy a new fan beofre I can use mycomputer?
Yellow is a tachometer signal, used to count RPM of the fan. I'm guessing if your fan doesn't have that or it's broken the mobo thinks the fan isn't running and therefore warns you. [editline]8th June 2011[/editline] Also, 4pin has a extra wire to control the fan speed by PWM
I got it working. I tried putting the three-pin on the two wire fan, and it didn't work. The only thing that I had left to try was to find a place for the old fan. Now it's taking up two of my 5.25" bays. It's probably the nicest looking ghetto-rigged thing I've ever made. The things on the both sides of the fan are from a VHS-Tape box. :v: Now all I need to do is get some mesh to cover it.
Nice job.
Or you could just use it as a blender..
Don't forget to attach a dust filter!
