I am deciding between the Radeon HD 7870:

They're both the same price so it's really down to which part is actually better.
I think they're about the same performance wise, maybe the 7870 is a couple % better. You just have to take into account that certain games run better on Nvidia cards, while others run better on AMD. So the choice really boils down to which games you'll be playing and which free game you prefer to get with you GPU.
I have a question in the same vein as this one, Don't want to make a new thread so I'll just ask it here.
my family is buying a prebuilt computer, It has a Gt 660 in it, I'm looking to upgrade that as I understand it isn't that great.
What would be a good card for around 200-250$?

if you don't want your games to constantly stutter and never perform properly, don't buy from ATI. THAT'S some advice to live your life by. I'm trying to spare this guy the pain and suffering that ATI GPUs cause and you guys are just raging because you have AMD cards and can't handle reality. yeah that's so relevant to what I just said. mid range nvidia outperforms high end AMD and actually has consistent framerate and doesn't require multiple patches 6 months after game releases just to be able to play. it's valve, if you're getting less than 60 on a the 3rd best GPU amd has to offer then that's pretty bold evidence that they're not doing too good.

I don't see how you can address that as logic. the 7700 series is the third highest tier AMD has. that's not really up for debate. I'm not comparing it to anything, and if I was, where the hell are you getting the 600 series from? that's the highest tier nvidia has. if I WAS comparing them it would be a comparison between the 7700 series and the 400 series. which has already been covered. using CS:GO as a template, the 460 gets 120 FPS while the 7770 get's 50 at the same settings. they're both in the same price range.

that's great but you're only taking framerate into account. a multitude of games suffer from stuttering and other problems with ATI cards. plus the framerates recorded were likely all after the games had been patched, almost every game I played when I had an ATI card was unplayable at launch and I had to wait for patches.
