today my steam account was accidentally logged out, not a big deal, then when I tried to log on it did not acknowledge my username. then when I used the auto-recover system it sent a blank name to the email for the account.

Ok, I got the name but now it says the username is not a valid one when I try to reset the password.
Are you sure you're entering it correctly? Make sure any capitals are typed as capitals
