i play the sax already for a number of years but trumpet also looks fun
any tips for beginners? i'll be using my brothers yamaha trumpet with a 5c mouthpiece
Your mouth goes on the thing and you blow into it.
Do you have any experience with playing brass instruments? I've been playing sax and euphonium for about 8 years :)
nop just the sax
Compared to sax, brass instruments require a lot more mouth work (obviously) so you'll want to practice a lot of lip slurs. Have you done overtones and altissimo on sax? They're similar in what you're trying to achieve on a brass instrument.
Make sure you hit the invisibility switch on the side, so that whenever you play you become invisible. Then you can go into libraries and malls playing the trumpet and watch as people look around and go "Where is that trumpet coming from?"

Now for some serious stuff:
-Have good embochure for the mouthpiece
-Learn to buzz and develop your tone. I'm quite sure you have breath support due to your years of saxophone playing.
-Don't you dare hold your breath. Your air must be a constant stream
-When buzzing, don't have your teeth together, and have your tongue at the bottom of your mouth.
-Try to have fun!
switch to clarinet, we're cooler
I haven't played any other instruments, but I think my approach would be to just watch Youtube tutorials or to pick up some books at a music store or something.
Trumpet is a lot of fun. I played it for like five years and I only gave it up after I realized I didn't enjoy the music as much as I thought I would. I could probably still pick it up and play a lot of old songs, but I just don't really care as much for that sound anymore. Plus, all the spit. Oh my god, the spit valve...

Nah, Tenor is way better
For your own sake, regularly clean the mouthpiece.
Whatever you do, no matter how tempting, do NOT attempt to play the trumpet with your penis. I can't stress this enough.
The little hook that holds your little finger, Put your little finger on top of it - not in it. This will relieve pressure from the mouth which helps with the tone and keep you from busting a lip during an awesome solo.

Then play it.
