• Garry's Mod Dedicated Server - Expectations

Hi, I apologies if this thread is posted in the wrong forum but I'm interested in renting a dedicated server to run multiple Garry's Mod servers. When it comes to hardware requirements with Garry's Mod servers I become a bit blank because I can't seem to find an official document about server demands/requirements. These questions may seem a bit silly but I'd like to know a bit more about the requirements for hosting a Garry's Mod server. -How demanding is SRCDs on the CPU and how much RAM does it take? (I know this may vary on the game-mode and addons but a rough idea would be nice) -Is SRCDs run on a single-thread? -If it is indeed single-threaded, with a multi-core server could I run multiple instances on separate cores? -What is the average network usage per player? Aside these questions, I have a few specifications about a server that I am keeping my eye on and I would like to know what your opinions are on this about how well it may run. CPU - 1x Intel® C2750 (Avoton) 8 Cores @ 2.4Ghz RAM - 8GB SSD - 120GB (can't give any more information on this) Guaranteed bandwidth - 200 Mbit/s Max bandwidth - 1 Gbit/s Traffic - Un-metered Any relevant feed-back will be greatly appreciated, thank you.
Guilty bump.
SRCDS is still largely single-threaded (i.e. the networking runs in its own thread, maybe other subsystems too, but the game logic isn't parallelized over multiple threads). The Avoton is a good CPU for low-end heavily parallelizable server applications, but no good match for a game server. SRCDS doesn't take that much performance these days, but GMod is a heavier game than other Source games and I wouldn't trust an Avoton to handle it. 8GB is plenty of RAM for several servers, though. SRCDS takes something in the tens of kilobytes per second per player (not counting file transfers and voice), a 100mbit/s connection with a couple terabytes of traffic allowance is absolutely enough for several servers - and I can say from experience that online.net won't mind you using that much. If you run multiple game servers, your OS will distribute their threads across your cores, so no issues there. My advice? Move up to the next largest alternative or OVH's offerings from 15€/month (+ VAT) upwards, though both are out of stock right now. They'd allow you to run a couple of GMod servers, no problem.
Thank you DrTaxi, I'll keep an eye on the next up alternative.
If you're OK with a server hosted in Germany, you can't go far wrong with Hetzner's Server Auction. https://robot.your-server.de/order/market/country/GB They've got quite a few older generation Core i7 boxes for fairly reasonable prices.

One thing to keep in mind is Hetzner is a very lean host in terms of staff. Most of their topology is automated and their customer base can generally take care of their own kit. If you tend to need quite a bit of help from your hosts, they may not be the best to go for.
Similar things can be said about OVH and Online.net, they're all pretty big (Online.net also has no English-language phone support as far as I know, in case that's important for you). But this also means that they're pretty quick at fixing issues that are their domain to fix. E.g. if your server locks up, their monitoring will notice it and their techs will reboot it within less than an hour even on a Sunday night. They just won't be very helpful if you contact them with technical support questions that go beyond the routine maintenance responsibilities of an unmanaged dedicated server host (unless you pay out your ass for priority/managed support).
I'm completely fine with minimum support, assuming that all hardware and the control panel (starting/stopping the server, re-installing the OS) works.
Sure does. With Online.net, you also get IPMI, pretty sure you don't have that with the other two (in that price range).
I'm planning to move from hetzner to online.net due to recent attacks. Is online.net okay with ddos?
They have free DDoS protection, so yes. From what I hear, that's not particularly effective though, and their better DDoS protection offers are 40€/month and 220€/month (the prices listed in their table are lower, but that's because they don't include the price of the service levels required to be able to rent them).
I've ordered business service level (lol) and preventive anti-ddos, will write off with results.
You know, I'd just try out the free one and see if it's good enough before dropping 40€/month on it...
