I've recently found my old Half-Life 1 - GOTY edition disk and reinstalled it. The game itself works fine, but mods don't. In this case I've downloaded Scientist Slaughterhouse from moddb.com, and installed it successfully to C:\SIERRA\Half-Life. To start it I go to Custom Games in the HL menu, activate SSH, and try to start a new game. When I do, I get the following message:

Then the game crashes to desktop. I Googled it, some people seem to be having this problem with Left 4 Dead but it's usually Steam-related. My Half-Life copy has nothing to do with Steam, however.
You should add it to steam, you're probably running a very old version.

Probably.
By 'add to steam' do you mean through the '+ ADD A GAME...' button on the lower left corner? Because I've tried that and it doesn't make a difference.
I'm thinking I should just buy it again through steam for ten bucks, but I'm a bit apprehensive of buying something I already own, and it's no guarantee it'll fix the problem.
Then again, it's only ten bucks...
no, you have a CD key you got for half life. add it to your steam.

I never even knew this was possible, thanks.
Anyway, I added my HL:GOTY CD key, and boy, Christmas came early this year. Instead of the actual product it gave me a bundle of some kind, complete with Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, Deathmatch Classic, Half-Life, Blue Shift, Opposing Force, Ricochet and TF Classic. Best idea ever.

Looks like it didn't make any difference. Doesn't seem to work with steam version either.
The WON version of Half-Life 1 (the version that comes on the Half-Life 1 install CD) doesn't work properly on any version of Windows later than Windows XP 32 bit.
Another thing is that Valve changed the Half-Life engine API significantly when they ported HL1 over to Steam. The two major changes were converting from the use of WONIDs to SteamIDs, and updating the network protocol from 46 to 47 (later to 48.) These changes broke many old HL1 mods, or made them buggy and not work properly. Many mods were derelict by the time Steam came around in 2003, so they were never properly fixed. I think SSH was one of the buggy mods that didn't work, but you can try this to install it:
I'm not sure where you tried installing SSH on Steam, but you need to download HL1 on Steam and play it at least once. Then browse to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Valve\Steam\Steamapps\yourusername\Half-Life\" or if you aren't running 64 bit windows: "C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\Steamapps\yourusername\Half-Life\" and drop the SSH folder in there.
You'll have to restart Steam after that for it to show up in the games list.

Half-Life Platinum Pack.
I got it too when I registered my key. I think it's a customer appreciation thing.
