I need a netbook to take on vacation, my budget is £275 (lower is better). I'd like to use http://www.amazon.co.uk/ because I'm going in 5 days and delivery is guaranteed with Amazon evening delivery.
I need to run:
Internet
Music
Visual Studio (Maybe pushing it? It's not 100% needed)
WiFi (I think I need G and N)
Ethernet
Headphone port (the small round one)
I'd also prefer something that looks decent.
I'm gonna be using some public wifi, if I use putty to connect to one of my servers and use that as a SOCKS proxy, is that secure from sniffing etc?
Thanks in advance
Most netbooks have the same specs, 1.6GHz Atom, and 1GB of ram. They just cost different amounts. Most if not all netbooks have what you need.
I was looking at this netbook, someone told me it's useless because of the 'shit CPU' and because it only has 1GB RAM?

It's a netbook. Those kinda specs are pretty standard.
Why not go for one of Asus' EEE Pc's, they seem to be of decent quality and the pricetag also seems right.
Is there any with 2GB RAM or do I need to buy another RAM stick to upgrade it?
You'd be fine. Even Visual Studio depends more on the processor than RAM while compiling. What else did you plan on doing with it other than VS?

VS2010, Notepad++, FileZilla, Steam, Pidgin, Skype, RDP, PuTTy, Spotify, foobar2k
I'd need 2GB ram for all that maybe...
Would it be able to watch movies?

The VS is for a C++ project that takes around 60 seconds to compile on my home computer, which is AMD Phenom X4 9850
Which 2GB ram stick goes with that one?
Any DDR2 SODIMM
This one?

I suggest just going and taking a drink of water when you're compiling on a netbook - you'll stay hydrated and the longer compile time won't feel like a pain.
But, no, really, it'll take a bit longer, sure, but it's probably not too bad.

I tried compiling WINE on my eeePC 1000......Never again.
It's not even a big task really.
This netbook's better

Its got a better CPU and more battery life
And this stick of RAM
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kingston-667MHz-DDR2-Non-ECC-SODIMM/dp/B000JREMTO/ref=pd_bxgy_computers_img_c
I need RAM from Amazon direct, I'm going away on the 28th and it needs to arrive before then.
the stick of RAM you linked will work
Do you know how long the one you linked will take to arrive?
mine took 2 days but that was last year
I'll just get the one I found I guess. I think Crucial is fine.
crucial is good
I'll be getting the crucial ram and the asus eee pc then, thanks for all your help everyone. :3:

Do you know how long this will take to arrive? Are there any similar/better ones direct from Amazon?
the case will fit the netbook like a glove
I don't think they can deliver it in 3 days though. I'll take a look to see if there's any direct from Amazon.

About to place the order. Is the RAM on the 1015PE (easily) upgradeable? I googled "1015PE RAM Upgrade" and couldn't find any instructions on how to upgrade it.
In pretty much every laptop you just unscrew a hatch on the bottom and the ram slides out and then you just put the new stick in.

WINE is a hell of a lot bigger project than what the OP will be compiling on his netbook.
One final question, can it play movies? I don't mean 1080p bluray, just those 500MB scorp or a 700mb axxo.

Yes.
Thank you, your order has been placed.
Thanks, everyone. :keke:
Where are you going, anyway?
