My father spilled water onto his monitor causing a weird black stain inside of it that neither of us have ever seen. Anyone ever experienced anything like this / know how to fix it?
I'm currently attempting to open the monitor itself, but of course if I want to know how to do that properly I need to buy a thirty dollar service manual..
if the monitor was hot, it was probably the water evaporating on contact, singing the surface? I'm not exactly sure.
But, you don't necessarily need a manual, just be very careful and organize your screws when taking it apart...

There are no screws, that's the problem.
I say let the professionals do it or just buy new one, just incase.

Repairs for water damage run at like 200-300 I hear, and the monitor itself is a good 400 bucks new.

You can do very good for 300.
I don't think this is repairable
Put it in an oven at a very very low temperature and let it "cook" for a while.
Should clear out the stains.
Probably killed off some pixels, causing the black stain looking thing.

Could be a bad idea, it's much better to just take it all apart, or if you can't manage to do that, just leave it for a week, no less, to dry.
take a picture of this stain

I'd really rather not bake my monitor, even if it's a possible solution.
I'll post pictures of the stain when I get home today.
An LCD display is filled with liquid (LCD = Liquid Crystal Display).
The actual display panel, therefore, is sealed so that liquids
(including water) cannot get out ... or in.
Your niece may have gotten water into the "optical stack", which is not
sealed (this is a stack of about 7 layers of optical materials in back
of and in front of the actual LCD panel. These are necessary, but they
are passive). The electronic circuitry is also outside the sealed LCD
display. If the water is in these areas, the panel may dry out in time
and work again on it's own.
You are most likely screwed. On small devices you can submerge them in isopropyl alcohol, without the battery of course, and place it in the fridge in a bag with rice to evaporate, that won't work for a full size screen though.
So I'm going to go ahead and crack it open then and see what damage I do, either way I'm screwed.

God the puns.

Be careful as hell, don't force anything or the glass will crack, it is very delicate. Also make sure you keep the order of the sheets proper and take it apart properly.
