2d design program, suitable for building design etc, not photoediting.

Hey people
I've started trying to plan my maps and stuff, but paint and photoshop don't cut it.
Are there any 2d design programs - free - that have a grid and are easy to just draw straight lines on??
Thanks
Autocad (professional engineering drawing program)
Delta cad (easier to use semi professional)
Paint.net Paint with alot of extra's.
I still prefer pen and paper to design maps but else I think Paint.net would be easiest.
Autocad and Delta cad aren't free...
Paint.net is rubbish for what i want.
You could use the orthographics viewports in Radiant (a 3d program for level design). Generally, architectural orientated packages are usually industrial and cost.
