• Computer wont power up. Only powers up for 1/4 of a second.

Hi I recently installed a new CPU fan and heatsink and no my computer refuses to power on. I took all necessary precautions while installing the CPU fan such as grounding myself and being very gentle with the parts however I believe I may have applied too much pressure when installing the first pin. When I turn it on the CPU fan and back fan spins for about 1/4 of a second then stops and everything powers off. I don't get a visual or any beep sounds (no beep sounds made me conclude that it may not be my mobo). When I press the power button again nothing will happen. I have to turn the back switch to cut off the power then turn it back on to try another attempt at booting up my computer. Is it possible that I may have broken my motherboard while installing the new CPU fan? If so I need to look into a replacement or warranty for my ASUS P5K Black Pearl edition. [editline]04:50PM[/editline] Also I should mention that there is a green LED light to the bottom right of my mobo that is continuously lit up even when the power is down. Any reason for this?
Did you plug the fan and CPU power cables in? Does putting the previous CPU back in make the computer work? Did you apply thermal paste between the new CPU and the fan before installing it? Also, that green light simply means the motherboard is receiving power from the power supply. Nothing to worry about.

Nothing to worry about.
Thank you for the reply. I believe the problem is not the CPU fan however I will try to power up the computer without the CPU fan and/or with the old fan. The new fan was a bitch to install though. Yes I applied a pea sized ball of thermal grease but I don't see what this has to do with not powering up. I used rubbing alcohol and some Qtips to remove the previous thermal grease.
DO NOT attempt to turn the computer on without the CPU fan! You risk damaging the CPU. Make sure there is a fan on there. If the new one was a bitch to install, make sure you did it right. Most fans are fairly easy to install when done correctly. Also, you might need more than a pea sized ball of thermal paste.
:psyduck: Burnt out component prehaps?
New post! Removing the CPU fan has allowed my computer to properly power on!! I believe the new heatsink may be causing interference with my power cables/mobo so i have to reinstall it in a different position. Thank you Computermaster. You truly are a Computer Master!
A different position? They only fit one way. I surmise the "being a bitch" part meant you actually installed it wrong, meaning it wasn't on the CPU correctly. Without the sink, the CPU passed its thermal limit very quickly and the computer cut itself off to protect the CPU. Gotta watch that kind of stuff.
New problem now located on the other thread ): Now the power stays on but I have no visual and I do not hear any beeps
