Windows 8 Pro for $39.99 after $30 Amazon Credit http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008H3SW4I/?ie=UTF8&tag=wen0b-20&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B008H3SW4I Upgrade or not? Opinions from the people who have used it, please!
If you're building a new machine and/or starting fresh, go for it. If you're just going to upgrade from 7, not worth it right now. That's how I see it.

it's like $40 for the best version, whereas ultimate 7 was like $180 at it's cheapest, so yeah, windows 8 is worth it even if you don't like metro (you get used to it very easily if you stop complaining about it and give it a serious try)
Worth it. Even Metro.

Damn. Well then, that's sure as fuck worth it.
Windows 8 is the best operating system they've put out since XP. Do I think they could have connected the Metro and Desktop experience better? Yeah. Definitely but they are at least trying to innovate and the performance boost is like going from Vista to 7 all over again.

Especially after trying the beta.
It's not "a little bit more".
With my week of having windows 8 beta, I noticed a slight difference in speeds. My boot time decreased by about 3 seconds ( I already had 14 second boot times ) and it felt like programs opened a second or 2 faster, its like whenever a new iphone comes out, its always a tiny bit faster.
The RTM is far faster than the betas were.
Better now than later while it's $40 to download. You don't want to give up the opportunity and then have a change of heart about W8 later when the price has already gone up.

On my 3-year old laptop it's like night and day, but I don't think my desktop will gain that much from it.
Don't forget the promo code that brings the price down to 15 dollars. At that price I had to upgrade.

Also I don't want to get used to the new layout, it just seems kinda dumb.

I'm loving Windows 8. I've been using it since like 2 or 3 builds ago. I think Win8 was a bold step, but a much needed one. Some neat things are going to come from Windows 8 and Microsoft's Surface.
Well, if you refuse to learn soemthing, it's kinda hard to deem it "dumb" don't you think?
I meant the metro idea, yeah it looks nice but it just doesn't appeal to me as a standard desktop thing. It's something I'd want in a tablet, when windows 9 is released and it has an actual start menu I'll probably get it, unless microsoft makes a version or an update where you can choose between metro and the standard start menu desktop. I don't refuse to learn it, I just don't want to. I will if I ever have to at a job or something but till then I'm fine with what I have.

Holy shit, are you kidding me? It's that cheap and it's not an upgrade? If you're building a new PC, go for it. Edit: Probably shouldn't get it unless you're running a Windows computer, it looks like the Upgrade version.
I installed it on my main PC after being very pleased with having it on my various laptops, and I got rid of it in under three hours. Actually using the RTM quickly made me realise how bad it is on my hardware, how bad it is with a graphics tablet and how bad some general input methods are. Noone in my family can get used to it either, which is a pretty sad realization considering I even showed them the tutorial videos. Even my linux distribution is a lot more familiar to them. It might be fine with Start8 or whatever, but I honestly don't see the point on any desktop PC at the moment. Sure, there are various other reasons to upgrade, but none that can't be fixed in to Win7, or even more jumpy, a standard linux distribution like ubuntu doesn't provide. [editline]28th October 2012[/editline] I am genuinely excited for Windows 8 on tablets, though. But I remain adamant that I don't like it very much on desktop PC's.
I feel like the vastly decreased bootup and shutdown time is useful on my laptop but the metro interface only extending to one monitor is a put-off on my desktop so I'll only run it on laptops
Are there any benchmarks that show the performance increase from 7 to 8?
currently using a custom theme for win7 using the process patcher will anything get wacky when i update?
For anyone upgrading and moving programs/registries/drivers, there is a rare chance that your programs/drivers have conflicts with Windows 8 that cause BSOD's. Simply refresh/restore Windows 8 to factory settings in that scenario.

You have to buy Windows 7 before you can get Windows 8 for $15 though.
But you have to buy Windows 7 first.
That's not true. I was given a Win 8 Pro DVD, installed it on my sister's laptop, but didn't have a key for it. Ran the upgrade utility on it in XP SP3 compatibility mode and was able to purchase a key for $15, no problem.
