Lords of the fallen wasn't just 'a bit like dark souls'. It was basically a dark souls clone. [editline]29th February 2016[/editline] It wasn't a bad game, its great that they are making a more original twist on the concept.
Lords of the Fallen had a lot of issues I hope they can resolve
Lords of the Fallen was an attempt to recreate some of the core mechanics and experiences from Souls games, they had some neat ideas and concepts but the execution left a lot to be desired. It's an mediocre game at best.

This was an ARPG, real time combat, that pushed me to play it despite being only at 20fps. It had a lot of great & original ideas that you can even see in Bloodborne and DS3, such as the charging up heavy attacks that made it into both games.

Hopefully they've gotten better, maybe they haven't. We'll see in time, I guess.
A sci-fi Souls game really does sound like a cool idea.
You know its a shame we call those games "Clones". 20 years ago we started calling games "Metroidvania" and that was a good thing, so why aren't we supportive of souls-like games?
It's just a catch-all term and not necessarily derivative because the sub-genre is new. It still exists with "rogue-like" (a game like Rogue), and existed for FPSes at one point with "doom clone" and to a lesser extent "dota clone". Give it time and maybe they'll come up with something better.

It seems dark souls is a game journalist's favourite comparison
Maybe set Dark Souls in 1980s Compton.
i would play the hell out of this
You mean like how Final Fantasy goes from a fantasy motif to a sci-fi motif
What's with that anyways? I never really wrapped my head around it.
