Post your favorite place that often appears in video games. Mine has to be castles that are nonsensically huge. They're always great.
Old crumbling ruins with nature growing throughout it. Nice and calm, yet old and mystic. Can make for some great scenery.
I like to explore huge detailed areas, I even download big RP maps in Garry's mod just so I can look around and admire all the work (the good RP maps at least)
Winter areas like Shiverpeaks in Guild Wars.
Beaches
Space
Space, space stations, zero gravity, oceans, snowy areas, huge castles.
It's hard for me to describe it alone, but there are a few in particular places that I can think of off the top of my head. Poker Night at the Inventory [thumb]http://thisismyjoystick.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/poker-night-inventory-1.jpg[/thumb] I don't necessarily care for poker, but damn, I love hearing the different characters interact with each other. Plus the chill background music makes me feel comfortable, bright. Thief: The Dark Project [thumb]http://www.wsgf.org/f/u/imagecache/node-gallery-display/contrib/dr/201/ingame_16x9.png[/thumb] This game is full of masterful environments. The sound development is simply, perfect. The level design is beyond it's time (1998) not particularly in terms of complexity, but in atmosphere. Some parts of the game can make you feel "there's no way I'm gonna make it out of here alive," but when you do; it's utterly fantastic. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas [thumb]http://www.moreapps.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/GTA-San-Andreas-PC-Game-MoreApps-1.jpg[/thumb] Some will argue that this can be interchangeable with other GTA games, but this one is my favorite. The level design was as realistic as it gets (2004) and it was awesome. Cruising down Los Santos at night with the radio going, and some grove street brothers along for the ride; just cool.
Really detailed homes. They don't have to be fully interactive, but I can spend an hour looking at all the junk lying around a room. I also like cities where it feels like I could people-watch in them. I like lived-in, imperfect places.
I like the moist places, wet and lots of foliage.
Desert, snowy mountains/areas, caves, old ruins/temples, all that Indiana Jones type stuff Skyscrapers as well
Any kind of area that is surreal, depressing, or atmospheric. I'm also a sucker for deserts and snow.
snow and sand, and space too. like when stuff is at nighttime especially. i think i get bored of tropical stuff pretty quickly [t]http://images.bit-tech.net/content_images/2012/07/spec-ops-the-line-review/4.jpg[/t] [T]http://static-8.nexusmods.com/15/images/110/3111364-1323390469.jpg[/T] [T]http://i2.minus.com/ijG5iaMjX2Xe1.png[/T]
In the presence of big anime titties.
Cowboys, robots and roman soldiers in the desert
Snow levels
Personally I love dense little waterside villages. Think Hla Oad in Morrowind, only grander in scale. Lots of shacks, rundown gantry's, walkways, hiding spots, things you can see but can't reach etc etc. Almost like the civilian areas in Metro 2033 / Last Light - that sheer density of detail and the feeling that in any direction there is something to explore or find. I love that. I love scifi locations of any kind.
Summer-y areas, places that are bright and colorful, or a nice warm sunset. Usually an upbeat song to go with it; feeling happy go lucky almost. It's part of the reason why I'm a sucker for Pokemon and GTA V, and I can't wait for Splatoon.
Snowy forests at night.
Huge, open areas like this:
I was thinking about this for a bit, and I wasn't really sure. I like expansive and quiet areas, underground areas, oceanic areas, celestial areas, dark areas with glowing colors, and impressively large structures. I usually have a hard time picking favorites. Hell, I don't even really have a favorite color. But after seeing something in another thread, I realized. My favorite places in videos games are giant holes in the ground. Giant holes in the ground are the best.
Battletoads.
Anywhere that gives the feels
Probably huge cathedrals, priories, abbeys. I love seeing big libraries and the like. Oh and castles too. Also, insane asylums. Outlast was a huge guilty-pleasure game of mine :v:
Anywhere where it's snowy, shitty run down villages, swamps, deserts, and really nice towns where people look like they give a shit.
Industrial/urban decay also: sprawling urban environments at night, like sleeping dogs Gothic style castle type stuff: Devil May Cry 1, Dark Souls Snowy areas Ancient Civilizations Underwater stuff
love SH2 but fuck that hospital
Places with unusual but simple and geometric architecture, and cities at night time, or right before night time. Actually, virtually anything at night is cool, especially if it's not too brightly lit. I like it moody.
I have a thing for space ships and space stations. One of my favorite things, however, is revisiting an exact location after shit has gone down, or in a sequel. I'm obsessed with seeing how things changed, or how different the location now feels. Although Halo: CE pretty much did this for 50% of the game, I loved the contrasting themes whenever you revisited a level. Assault on the Control Room had you fighting grand battles in the daytime alongside your marine buddies. When you revisit the same place at night after the flood is released, you're all alone. Half Life also did this with you revisiting areas from Anomalous Materials after everything went to shit in Unforseen Consequences, and Doom 3 did something very similar with Mars City. Half Life 2 had you revisit Kleiner's lab after the uprising. I think Opposing Force had you revisit some Half Life areas, also.
