• Searching for a laptop

Hello Facepunch and Facepunchers ! I created this thread to know what would be the best laptop for my studies in the field of graphic art. I am a bit new in regard of these things, at least it would be my first laptop, and I need yours advices. I am looking for a laptop capable of running my favorite softwares (such as Photoshop CS and Paint Tool SAI with my Wacom graphic tablet) as well as potential softwares that could be useful in any future projects (such as Sony Vegas, Source SDK and etc...). Needless to say, I also want to play my favorite games (all Source games, Killing Floor, etc...) and other games that requires a good hardware (Crysis 2, Dead Space 1 & 2), with a fluid framerate (20-30 fps minimum) I would like to say that I will only buy in a local store. For the simple reason that I want to avoid any problems with the warranty on the Internet, if my product came to be defective. I had this kind of problem with computers parts back then, and the return was particularly long and annoying, and moreover, my parents do not want to deal with that too. The models I have already pre-selected may be available in my local store, but only at mid-May. I will purchase my laptop in June (after my exams). I know it is too early for you to create this topic, but as I said earlier, these models may be available only at mid-May, and I do not think there will be any other interesting laptops before a long time. My choices have brought in three different brands: Acer, Asus and Lenovo ACER Aspire 5750G-2414G75Mn (i5-2410M - 4 Go RAM - 750 Go 5400rpm - 15.6" - GeForce GT 540M) (700€) ACER Aspire 5750G-2634G64Mn (i7-2630QM - 4 Go RAM - 640 Go 5400rpm - 15.6" - GeForce GT 540M) (800€) ASUS N53SV-SX129V (i5 2410M - 4Go RAM - 640 Go 5400rpm - 15.6" - GeForce GT 540M) (~750€) ASUS N53SV-SX468V (i7 2630QM - 4Go RAM - 750Go 7200rpm - 15.6" - GeForce GT 540M) (~950€) LENOVO IdeaPad Y560p (i7-2630QM - 4Go RAM - 500 Go 7200rpm or 750 Go 5400rpm - 15.6" - GeForce GT 540M or Radeon HD 6570) (Unknown price since this laptop is not available in France yet but I'm very interested in this model) I heard that Sandy Bridge processors were very good recent processors, whether for multimedia use as for games, and the GT540M seems to be pretty good for any game. Every laptop I choosed, offers a very good battery life (between 4h30 and 6 hours) despite their powerful hardware. In the side of cons, I heard that the keyboard was completely unusual and the screen was highly reflective (using the laptop outside seems not to be very pratical). Are these good for you? If you have any suggestions on other models that correspond more to my requests, I am listening. Thanks in advance for your reponses, and have a nice day guys !
My friend has an ASUS... it has a glossy screen, and we use his car as a base of operations to program our arduino powered spy car. It's unbearable, get matte wherever you can, you lose some vividness but it's a much more versatile screen. As far as hardware goes on all of those... damn. You'll be fine with any of those. The second ASUS is probably your best choice. I have a video card worse than the GT540 that runs all games you listed no problem, of course since laptops have a mobile card it will be a little worse with performance but any of those laptops will really do you fine. Lenovo and ASUS are among the more reputable brands so get either of those, if you can. Though I have a Sony VAIO and I can attest that those are very nice as well. My ultimatum, the first ASUS is very powerful for the money and with the 5400RPM hard drive, load times would be somewhat slow but otherwise you'd be set. If you can, get a 7200RPM drive, I just purchased a 7200RPM drive for my laptop and the difference is significant.
My config on my current laptop is generally the same as the ASUS N53SV-SX468V You'll get >20fps on high settings on Crysis 2. Though, I found out the 540m isn't very good over 1366 x 768 res because of the GDDR3 vram holds it back considerably.
Yeah, Crysis 2 may be pushing it but Dead Space 2 should run medium-high beautifully.
Asus, anything Asus.
4 Go of RAM..? The fuck? :raise:
Macbook Pro 17 Inch

I'm looking for the same stuff as the OP, so I'm going to ask in here instead of in a new thread: Is this computer acceptable for the requirements in OP? i7-2630QM 4 GB Ram 1 TB HDD (RPM not informed) Nvidia GTM 540, 1GB

So basically, the ASUS laptop with i5-2410M seems to be the better choice for value/price? (though the other one with the i7 seems more powerful, I may not see too much the difference in games/softwares compared to the i5) [editline]10th April 2011[/editline] I guess the difference is clearly minimal according to these benchmarks
Whats the model?
ASUS N73SV-TY145V
I have a Vaio too, runs everything fine. I gave what equals to £600 for it. Specs; i3-330m, 5650m, 500 gigger hdd and 4 gigs of ram.
