Hey, I'm shopping for a laptop, but I'm really bad with this stuff and I'm looking for some general advice. I'm not going to use it for gaming, I'm just using it for relatively basic editing work in Sony Vegas, plus other basic things of course like internet. I was looking at Sony Vaio. My price range would be like $800-$1100, and to do the work I need to do I would preferably need a good processor (i7 would be preferable), 8gb of ram, and a Nvidia card, cause Sony Vegas is optimized for Nvidia. Is AMD synonymous with Nvidia, cause all the laptops I've been looking at say AMD graphics.
Is Sony Vaio a good brand? I know when it comes to desktops the big name ones are usually shit and it's better to build your own, but it's different for laptops right? Also I'm looking for the best websites to buy from, cause I'm trying to capitalize on holiday sales. I live in Canada so I might be able to get a deal on Boxing Day (our version of Black Friday, happens the day after Christmas), but if not I'm gonna have to try and find a sale online cause I'm trying to save as much money as possible for other things.
Look no further than the Vaio S series (buy it direct from Sony using their customised to order thing, get mostly min spec besides cpu and throw in your own aftermarket ram/ssd)
If it's relevant, I believe they come with a fully licensed copy of Sony Vegas in the US/Canadian market

Thanks, they look good. Would you say an i5 processor is fine or should I definitely go for an i7? I don't do anything heavy like special effects but I still wanna be safe
If the i5 mobile cores are anything like they are in the desktop models then it will do just fine. i7 is geared more towards extreme gaming or stuff that needs hyper threading.

All mobile i5's are dual core's with hyper threading. They are still very powerfull though, and tun my 3d engineering aps awithout a hitch.
The mobile i7's are true quad core's.
OP: If you do alot- and i mean ALOT of video editing, yes get the i7. Else the i5 will do fine.
Quality brands to look at: Asus, Sony, Sager, Msi.

Some ivy bridge i7s (3520M) are just i5s with a slightly higher clock rate
OP I would advise either the i5 option or the more expensive of the two i7 options (as it's a quadcore will be better for video work, but will come at a battery life penalty of ~1 hour at low load so may not be advisable for web browsing use)
