Quite possibly the worst designed controller I've ever seen.
Trackpads? Really? Useless.
Central buttons arranges in a square formation in the middle of the damn thing? Do these people even know how to design a controller?

Have you tested it?
Have you tested it?
It doesn't matter if the thing works, it's still a poorly designed controller.
The Xbox 360 controller works, it's still very poorly designed. Way better than this thing, though.
What kind of button placement is that? Do they expect you the reach your thumb across the entire controller whenever you want to do something?
Also, trackpads are USELESS. There's a reason most people disable the trackpads on their laptops when they use them, they SUCK, especially for gaming.
I feel horrible for anybody who tries to use those trackpads to play Half-Life.

Ah I didn't realize you'd used one, thanks for filling me in.
You must be one of the few that think that the 360 controller is poorly designed.
You don't even need to use it to see it's flaws.
Just LOOK at it.
That is some of the most abysmal button placements since the CD-i controller.
Its like they're trying to compete with the PS4 controller but they wanted to be different so badly they had to use something that everyone universally hates.

More like they needed something that provided an edge over existing controllers. Valve don't have to deal with the cruft of a design history so they were free to make something nobody was expecting.
I'd like to see how the user feedback is once the beta units ship.

Could you just shut up?
"I have never used one, BUT LOOK AT IT. SERIOUSLY LOOK AT IT. LOOK HOW AWFUL IT LOOKS IT MUST BE SOOOOO SHITTY."
So. Have you used one? People also said that Nvidias Shield project controller was poorly designed and had shitty ergonomics, until some actually tried it out. They were positively surprised by its ergonomics.

Where are ergonomics when your extending your thumb across the entire controller just to press a button? A button that's in a square formation so there is no up, down, left, right? Only four corners along the entirety of the middle of the controller?
Don't tell me to shut up unless you know what you're talking about.

The buttons are on the inside edge of the trackpads, the buttons in the center shouldn't have anything to do with gameplay.

Did you even READ the page?
Every button and input zone has been placed based on frequency of use, precision required and ergonomic comfort. There are a total of sixteen buttons on the Steam Controller.
Those 4 buttons will be used for functions that aren't frequently used, and even then, you have 12 buttons aside from those, 8 of which can be accesed without lifting your thumbs, so I don't see your point.
Also, trackpads are USELESS. There's a reason most people disable the trackpads on their laptops when they use them, they SUCK, especially for gaming.
But laptop trackpads aren't designed for use with your thumb, on a controller, the way the steam controller's trackpads are.
The way I see it, it has potential to be more precise than control sticks, bringing that best of both worlds experience they suggest.
Trackpads have never been good or useful, though. At any point.
I'm sorry to say but it appears to me like Valve is absolutely full of shit on this one.
There's nothing innovative or good about this controller. They just want to make it gimmicky with technology that is unnecessary and quite frankly very useless.

Please, master. Teach me how to see into the future. Teach me how to criticize products on full extent that have been announced for at least 1 hour.

You want to know why people like analog sticks?
Because they work. There was absolutely no need to get rid of them. They're thinking with their wallets instead of their brains.

Valve makes first person shooters where absolute input is much better than controlling velocity. I think you might have missed the point.

Then *gasp* design an EFFICIENT KEYBOARD AND MOUSE TO USE FOR YOUR NEW COMPUTER LINE.
Like, seriously, I know they're making a controller to appeal to the console-gamers for the Steam Machines but seriously, everyone knows that pads at ALL are not very efficient for shooters, in any build. There's never been a controllers as precise as a mouse and keyboard, because a pad doesn't have the freedom of mobility and aim that a mouse has. Trackpads won't improve this either, there's no real sensitivity, especially if you have a large thumb. If you have big hands you're FUCKED.

Uhh thinking with their wallets would mean playing it safe. This is a risk. Does not compute.
"This controller LOOKS like shit"
"What if it's actually ergonomic, precise, and fun to use?"
"It LOOKS LIKE SHIT, so it MUST BE BAD"

If it proves me wrong then it proves me wrong.
It still appears to me like a useless piece of shit, though.
I'll stick to a mouse and keyboard, thanks.

I have large hands and played in CAL on CS:S with a trackpad, shut the hell up.

This is for the living room where you can't use a mouse and keyboard.

Thats cool, I can't even play turn based games accurately with fucking track pads let alone fucking work.

Why in the name of Jah did you put your gaming PC in the living room?
Why are people getting so upset about this anyway? You have complete freedom with this controller. If you don't like it, you can plug in a keyboard and mouse, a regular controller, or you can hack this one and give it d-pads, analog sticks or what have you.
Why in the name of Jah did you put your gaming PC in the living room?
Because you don't want to pay Microsoft for the privilege of ripping you off?
Why in the name of Jah did you put your gaming PC in the living room?
Are you completely oblivious or just stupid?
