• Is anyone here allergic to a pet they own? How do you deal with it?

My family and I recently purchased a new pup to help with the passing of our last dog, and It's been hell with all of the symptoms I've been displaying on top of everything else I've been dealing with. I've been getting all of the allergic reactions just short of hives. I've been taking Reactine every 2 days because it's effects were surprisingly powerful after 24 hours, but it seems I'm building up a tolerance for them and now I have to use 1 daily. Is using an antihistamine such as reactine daily really worth it? I've heard that it's only supposed to be used for short term relief, and if using it for long term relief can compromise the immune system for a dangerous period of time, not to mention the fact that one will build up a large tolerance to reactine as well. I really can't just give up and send the dog to a shelter or possibly straight back to the breeder we got it from. I'm constantly depressed as it is and I really don't want to loose the one thing that actively brings back memories of my last dog. I don't know why I'm exhibiting symptoms now, my last dog wasn't a dander-less, hypoallergenic dog, and I tested negative for dog allergies when I was a little kid, however I will speak with my doctor as well as take one of those tests again, but that can take up to 6 months here apparently to actually get the test. I guess I could also move out, but my dad is allowing me to continue living here while I'm going though university - which is an extremely courteous offer and it would be quite expensive to start renting an apartment. I'm stuck here between the few choices I can see.
You are digging your own grave, Could try getting a friend to keep him until you can work out a better situation.
