So I am thinking of changing my 2nd PC to a mac for a while, and the mac mini seems to suit what I need it for, I just want to know some things about it before I buy it:
Can I plug my 5:1 Surround sound speakers into it?
Will I be able to run games such as World of Warcraft/Team Fortress 2 @ 1366 x 768 or higher?
Would 3DS Max/AutoCad be able to run on it without lag?
Im thinking of getting the Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz 4GB Nvidia 320M Version, and have it hooked up to either a 32"/37" TV
it should be fine for what you need for, but TF2 still has some performance issues.

You can get a VERY good gaming PC for the price of a Mac Mini, you know.
he is asking about the Mac Mini, not a gaming PC.
he is asking about the Mac Mini, not a gaming PC.
He can install Mac on a PC, if he wants Mac so badly. :downs:
Most people in this section don't have Macs, but rather Hackintoshes.
and?
and?
And YOUR point being?
the OP is asking about the Mac Mini and if will be able to do the tasks he wants it to do, this has nothing to do with buying a gaming PC.
the OP is asking about the Mac Mini and if will be able to do the tasks he wants it to do, this has nothing to do with buying a gaming PC.
It's a simple friendly suggestion saying that you can get something much better that is capable of performing the same task for a more money-wise investment.
the OP is asking about the Mac Mini and if will be able to do the tasks he wants it to do, this has nothing to do with buying a gaming PC.
The only things different are the size, and the os.
Not to mention the not so great hardware in the mac mini.
If he wants the whole mac scheme of things he can go hackintosh and save money and have better preformance hardware wise, although nothing but self made cases + mini atx can beat the size of it.
And before you say the size for portability, he asked about having external speakers, thus its not moving.

Once I have the mac I'm rebuilding my current PC with a Core i7/4GB/GTX 460SLI setup with my three 20" screens, I dont need another gaming PC. The mac mini is going to be used for music/media/light gaming/developing games for the mac using apps such as unity or the iphone sdk, light 3ds max/autocad use, and adobe software use. And I have been wanting to get a mac but I dont like the idea of spending loads of money on it (£1000+), so the mac mini ticked the box just fine.
it should be fine for what you need for, but TF2 still has some performance issues.
Oh right, I'm sure that I can wait for the performance issues to be fixed once I get it, also anyone know about having the speakers hooked up to it? it only has one audio input but apparently it still supports surround. Maybe a HDMI->HDMI+Audio Splitter would work?

VERY good is quite a stretch, isn't it? and he clearly already has a PC which is most likely a gaming pc anyway
VERY good is quite a stretch, isn't it? and he clearly already has a PC which is most likely a gaming pc anyway
For £600-£900 you can get a great PC.
VERY good is quite a stretch, isn't it? and he clearly already has a PC which is most likely a gaming pc anyway
My laptop cost 600 bucks and can play L4D2 all high at 70-80FPS, Crysis Warhead at 30FPS or so on all high, Mafia II at 25-30FPS on all low (Unoptimized piece of shit, but whatever).
Why the hell does every thread where someone asks if he should buy a mac turn into a Mac vs. PC shitstorm ? The OP already has a PC, and wants to try a Mac, so he decided to buy the cheapest one, he doesn't want to know that a PC is better (because he knows that already)

I don't see the shitstorm. I see an intelligent discussion.
We are suggesting the OP gets a new PC directly, and installs Hackintosh.

Find me a hackintosh build that doesnt take up any space, has decent spec and can have leopard installed from the original disc.

what
The rest should be availible somewhere. I don't know TOO much about Hackintoshes.

I mean that is small like the mac mini, isn't a huge tower on the desk. I will have a look but unless I see something amazing and hassle free I will stick with the mini.
Oh well.
OP, if you do get the Mac Mini can you tell me how it performs? I'm interested in getting one also.
First I saw your avatar as a combine, then I noticed it was a cow :3:
I need to get back to real life.
Pretty low, and looks quite good too: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811154100&cm_re=mini_ITX_case-_-11-154-100-_-Product
I suppose you will have this under your tv?
it's a donkey.

your laptop can only pull off 80fps in L4D2 but can do crysis warhead at 30FPS? and then struggles with MAfia II more than Crysis Warhead?
are you just guesstimating performance or something because unless you have APEX on in mafia ii it should be:
Left4Dead2
Mafia II
Crysis Warhead

Benchmarks don't lie.
But I've never seen an APEX setting in Mafia II...

Well, fuck.

mafia ii is not an unoptimized piece of shit so something is wrong
I have a Mac Mini. Last gen, 2.26. I have edited huge photoshop files. I have half the ram of this potential machine you are looking into. I recommend it, 200%

I don't think you will get full surround from it though. only a 3.5mm
OP, if you do get the Mac Mini can you tell me how it performs? I'm interested in getting one also.
Will do, I will probably be getting it in 1-2 Months depending on whether I sell my other PC, which will pay for half of the mini as I am buying the TV along with it: http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/lg-32ld450-32-full-hd-lcd-tv-04892125-pdt.html .

Thats good to know, I found a way round it, If I use my special adapter that came with my speakers I can plug it into the TV, then run the hdmi through so then audio is sent aswell.
If I use my special adapter that came with my speakers I can plug it into the TV, then run the hdmi through so then audio is sent aswell.
what the fuck kind of adapter pulls 6 channels out of two channels like that
[editline]10:25PM[/editline]
then again you can also use 3.5mm for video input/output so hey
