So I'm looking to build myself a new computer for Christmas. And i could really use some suggestions for parts.
I'll have about $2,000 to spend on this build.
This is going to be my gaming/school computer. Most of the time it'll be used for gaming, but for my schoolwork I will occasionally be doing some 3D rendering, so speed and visual performance are my primary goals.
The other thing i'm going to need is lots of hard drive space.
I already have one 500gb Hitachi HDD that is in my current machine, but I would like to install it as a slave drive in the new one. So I'll be needing new hard drive(s) with plenty of room.
I already have a monitor (1440x900) which I will reuse, a keyboard, mouse, and speakers.
I'm in the US.
Any help would be appreciated.
Is the Hitachi HDD Sata or Ide?
you might want a new monitor seeing as $2k is way overkill for 1440x900

5870 X2 = 850$

What do i need the SSD for?
So should i get two of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161301 when they come back in stock?
My friend is telling me to look at getting a 295 coop instead.
I really hope you're not getting two 5870s to play on a 19 or 17" 1440 x 900 monitor. Big, big waste.
Also, your friend is misinformed. The 295 is no longer a viable choice - if you care about price:performance.

The ssds will be used as a boot drive. You install you os on that and all the rest goes on the hard drive. You can also put a few programs on it.
Also get two of these now the extra money is worth it since they are in stock.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150456
Finally get one of these.

Still a big case of overkill here. I think you should, at the very least, buy one, see how it goes, and then add another one if you find from first-hand experience that you truly need more power. I personally would take one 5870, then take the $400 you saved from the 2nd 5870 and put it into a really nice monitor. A 21.5" monitor is out of place with a $2000 system, don't you think?

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT GETTING A 1200P MONITOR?

, oh wait that is the point of this

21.5" monitors give the best picture at a resolution of 1920x1080.
I'm sorry, I didn't realise the specs of that monitor. Still, he can max every game with one 5870. Why should he spend $400 extra for basically nothing?
So he can double super mega max Crysis of course.

To have a longer gap in between upgrades.
But as I keep saying the 5870 isn't going anywhere—he can easily pick up another one later for a lot less. Take my 4870 for example: I bought it for £175 when it came out, but now it's £90. Buying only one initially also leaves the option of selling the 5870 at a later date and buying the new latest and greatest alternative, instead of being left with two now greatly value-depreciated 5870s.

Some people just don't feel like upgrading. So they get parts that will last them the longest.
