Wow. An update that actually adds something genuinely cool and tries to address the horrible combat? That's actually pretty damn awesome.
I mean to be fair there was a dual wielding mod years ago but anything neat like this that becomes part of the main game is a really good thing in my opinion
Shulkers? What, do I have to watch out for Reyners too, soon?
Also dual-wielding is a great thing.
15w31a has introduced the potentially game-changing ability to carry an item in each hand. You can only wield one weapon at a time, so there’s no chance of dual-sword set-ups. But you might have a pickaxe in your main hand a torch in the other - right-clicking to stick lights in the walls as you dig deep into the earth.
Not to bash on Mojang (again), but I am curious about their development. With the kind of resources they have, one would think they would have implemented these features ages ago.
I wonder if Mojang will still be trying to flesh out minecraft in like 5 years.

In this instance, they've basically had to rewrite how the game treats items. Before this update, some items had left-click actions (digging with a shovel or pick-axe), some had right-click actions (placing torches, eating food), and some had both (attacking and blocking with a sword).
With dual-wield, left-click is your main-hand, and right-click is your off-hand, so item behavior depends on which hand it's in. And with so many items to account for in the game, dual-wield would require huge changes to one of the most important parts of gameplay - something you wouldn't want to mess with in a hurry, even if the code is a bit shit.
"for lefties, there’ll be an option to switch the dominant hand on your player model."
Woop
I'm not a lefty, but I know some who are.

Well it isnt going anywhere and it's primary player base is young kids who don't have the same expectations as a teenager / adult. So it's possible.

They probably were better off starting off from scratch and possibly creating a proper engine. This game's development has been going since what, 2009?

Hence Minecraft Windows 10 edition. Even though it takes the code from pocket edition (C++) they seem to be aiming for future feature parity, and I reckon they will probably put more effort into accelerating its development as time goes forward. It runs quite nicely currently, as one would expect. Will have to see how long it takes to catch up.

Most of those seperate actions did nothing. Theres no reason to attack with a piece of meat or a bucket, you could easily just roll most of the items into a one click action. For the sword blocking did they actually do anything with it? I could see it easily be replaced with a shield item.

that's why they're rewriting to whole thing.

No true fullscreen though
could be way worse, however.
