Using a DVI-to-HDMI adapter - Hardware & Software

I posted a thread pertaining to using my HDTV as a PC Monitor. I was at Best Buy today and the man working there said that using a VGA cable will make it look like trash. He advised using a DVI-to-HDMI cable, however they were 80 dollars (ripoff city, I know) I didn't mention this which I should've, but I have a DVI to HDMI adapter that came with my 9800GT. It was manufactured by NVidia, and I was wondering if this was the right way to go. Considering the price gap between a basic HDMI cable versus a DVI to HDMI, I think it's an alright alternative. Any thought before I save up for a 40 dollar HDMI cable?

A DVI-to-HDMI adapter will do fine, and you'd be a fool to spend $40 on a HDMI cable.

So a $15 HDMI or DVI to HDMI (whichever you mean) will look fine.

just get a $5 hdmi cable from monoprice.

He's lying through his teeth about VGA, it will look fine. First things first: HDMI is DVI, but with an audio signal and a different plug. Use the adapter that came with your graphics card, and then buy an HDMI cable from Newegg or Monoprice. Never spend more than $8 on a cable, especially a a digital cable. I bought a 25ft HDMI cable off of Newegg for $20... very useful

VGA looks fine, I'm using a 32" Vizio as my monitor via a DVI - VGA adapter. If you stare at the screen less than a foot away from it, you will see some pixelated shit, but it games and movies look amazing on it.
