I posted a thread pertaining to using my HDTV as a PC Monitor.
I was at Best Buy today and the man working there said that using a VGA cable will make it look like trash. He advised using a DVI-to-HDMI cable, however they were 80 dollars (ripoff city, I know)
I didn't mention this which I should've, but I have a DVI to HDMI adapter that came with my 9800GT. It was manufactured by NVidia, and I was wondering if this was the right way to go. Considering the price gap between a basic HDMI cable versus a DVI to HDMI, I think it's an alright alternative.
Any thought before I save up for a 40 dollar HDMI cable?
A DVI-to-HDMI adapter will do fine, and you'd be a fool to spend $40 on a HDMI cable.

Yeah, I found a 15 dollar one off of Newegg. Will it look like trash or will it have a quality equivalent to a PC monitor.
Also I'm afraid this is in the wrong section, sorry!

The quality of different digital cables doesn't vary with price, iirc analog used to, to some degree but now they're all the same really. So a $15 HDMI or DVI to HDMI (whichever you mean) will look fine.

I've heard that some refresh rates can screw up the signal, and also something about overscan
just get a $5 hdmi cable from monoprice.

Okay.
Best Buy Salesmen are told to sell you retardedly expensive cables, and will misinform you to accomplish this. He's lying through his teeth about VGA, it will look fine.
First things first: HDMI is DVI, but with an audio signal and a different plug. Use the adapter that came with your graphics card, and then buy an HDMI cable from Newegg or Monoprice. Never spend more than $8 on a cable, especially a a digital cable.

I bought a 25ft HDMI cable off of Newegg for $20... very useful
VGA looks fine, I'm using a 32" Vizio as my monitor via a DVI - VGA adapter. If you stare at the screen less than a foot away from it, you will see some pixelated shit, but it games and movies look amazing on it.
6ft HDMI Cable on Amazon - $0.02
Male DVI to Female HDMI on Amazon - $5.00
Watching someone at Best Buy get suckered into buying an 80$ Monster Cable - Priceless
