i built my first comp in like 2009 and i've been using it since. apart from the peripherals + the GPU + HDD, i haven't really upgraded it at all and recently i've been kind of frustrated with some downright terrible FPS in CPU-heavy games (e.g. battlefield 3 and arma 3.) so basically i feel like i need to bump it up: i would prefer to do this as cheap as possible but i guess my top budget could be considered around $300 to the $400 range. i haven't really been up-to-date with all the new hardware so yeah. if it's just a CPU replacement i'm fine w/ that, but i imagine since i think LGA 775 is p outdated it's out of the question.
here's my specs:
CPU: intel core 2 duo e8600 @ 2.8 ghz (w/ arctic cooling freezer 7 pro even though i haven't OC'd it at all)
GPU: xfx radeon 6850 HD 1GB (installed last year to replace a broken evga 9800 GTX+)
mobo: evga 750i SLI FTW, LGA 775
PSU: coolmax 600w modular thing
RAM: 8GB corsair XMS2 DDR2 800
HDD: seagate barracuda 1TB 7200 RPM SATA, etc.
sound: internal mobo generic realtek thing
cooling: 2 case fans i think, apart from the CPU/GPU/PSU fan - there's a fan on the FSB but i assume that would probably go.
OS: windows 7 home premium 64-bit
chassis: NZXT apollo ricer crap
monitor: 1680x1050 LG flattron w2286l
i have no brand preference, i'm fine with going AMD with the CPU or w/e. i'm not really going to be doing 2 GPUs or whatnot (despite the SLI on my previous mobo, i had a 9800 GTX+ earlier with i was going to dual up but that died before i could do anything)
i'm also looking for something that's relatively decent rather than top-of-the-line stuff; like i said, i would prefer it to be as cheap as possible, but then again, it probably won't be cheap. i'm mainly looking for CPU/Mobo/RAM upgrades, anything besides that seems outside the question, my GPU is fine and i think my PSU can handle the new stuff.
if i decide on anything i would probably buy it within 2 months, also. (i live in USA)

This is a lovely CPU/MOBO combination. Top of the line out of the i5 Haswells with an overclocking Z87 motherboard which comes highly recommended on this forum.
