I want an all-around media device like the ipod touch, but I was wondering if there were any alternatives to it or if it's the best device for music/video/app software.
Android or whatever, I'm looking for some sort of portable touch screen device that does what the ipod does, but I'm wondering if there's any other devices like it. I can't seem to find anything outstanding on google.
Thanks!
There is no android media device besides the phones, in which you could always buy an android phone without service and just load it up with music and videos.
The only real media device that matched up with the ipod touch was the Zune HD. Microsoft no longer makes the Zune brand, but it was pretty decent, and you can still find it available for purchase.
If you are looking for an ipod alternative, I would suggest looking into it and see if it is what you are wanting.
Samsung Galaxy player is a possibility.
There are a whole lot of other android PMP's too.
I have a Zune HD, and I like it a lot better than the iPod touch. I've had for about two years now and never had a problem with it, the Zune software is also way better that iTunes imo.

Thanks everyone!
still if you'd like to play a game from time to time or enjoy some video, the iPod with it's big app selection and it's retina display is the best
Or.... you could get a device which is 16:9 and not hold it 2mm from your eyeballs.
The fact that they do a Wi-fi only version of the Samsung Galaxy S2 is pretty impressive.
Yeah, there's an alternative. It's called a smartphone, and guess what? It's a phone, too!
cowon s9
Used android phone without service, you can get phones with bad ESNs off ebay pretty cheap.
I agree with what the above user said. Most android phone serves great for such purpose.
And if its a galaxy flagship device, it usually has a wolfston DAC in it.
I had a Galaxy Player 5.0 a while back, it was fucking great.
The iPod classic does video, and is actually a better value compared to the iPod Touch if all you're going to do is media related things (160 GB for $250 vs $300 for 16). It doesn't have a touchscreen, but unless you're intending to actually use apps on your thingy that doesn't really matter.
If you *are* intending to use apps though then a serviceless Android phone will work fine, as everyone else said.

The Epic 4G with a bad ESN is a pretty solid PMP

Not exactly. Only the original SGS, the new SGS III, and the Galaxy Player 50 use a Wolfson DAC, plus a couple tablets made in 2011. The SGS II, Galaxy Note, and every other Galaxy Player uses a Yamaha one which is pretty meh according to devs like Supercurio isn't even on par with the Cirrus Logic audio processor used in the iPod Touch
Although, to be honest the iPod Touch isn't a terrible choice these days. It's not incredibly expensive, it's lightweight and slim (Compared to a smartphone which has to accommodate the cell radios and antennas), the pixel density is great, the apps available are usually optimised for the hardware and the OS is fairly snappy. There's also the benefit of having a bunch of cases and accessories that will work flawlessly with it.
However, one downside is you need iTunes. But it's not the end of the world, and your stuff is totally backed up and synced with your computer in case you drop it in the toilet or something. The cost could be considered a downside, though $200 ($150-ish used) isn't terrible.
No MicroSD card slot could be a problem if you have a bunch of music, though IMO, 8 GB is plenty if you don't go nuts with discographies. Video can take up a lot, which is why I used Airvideo ($4 or something in the app store) when I had my iPod Touch. Basically, you install the app on the iPod and a small piece of software on your computer and you can stream almost any video format to the device on-the-fly.
Zune HD.

if you needed itunes to use an ipod I wouldn't have one
As benjgvps pointed out, the iPod touch is not a bad device at all, I've used my sister's partner's device a few times and enjoyed it, iOS is completely fine for using as a media device and the app support is good, they don't have the best DACs in them though but with average sounding head/earphones, you won't hear a noticeable difference. iTunes is definitely not good on windows but it isn't the devil people make it out to be, I used it back when I had an original iPhone and seldom had issues.
Other than that, Galaxy player 5 is competitively priced, the specifications aren't fantastic compared to the phone version (note) but it does well, the 800x480 screen on a 5" device is quite low compared to other Android media players or iPod touch, but I'd much prefer a worse PPI but larger screen for video viewing personally, there's no point in having 300+ PPI if the display is small for video, for text and browsing the high PPI is nice to have though.
Nowadays iTunes is pretty much obsolete for use with iPods. I have an iPod Touch 4G and almost never have to use iTunes, the only reason I have it installed is for the drivers for other software to be able to communicate with the iPod, never have to run the program.
Updates to iOS are now done directly through the device itself via Wifi.
For managing music I use the awesome, free CopyTrans Manager. They have a paid version which manages videos / playlists (Which can be done on the device itself) / Audiobooks etc. as well but the free version works just fine.
I guess you might need to use iTunes for adding your own video, but that shouldn't be too much of an issue.
+1 for iPod Touches here.
I've been using iTunes on Windows since I got my first iPod in 2008. I honestly haven't had any problems with it. It runs sluggish at times but when it works, it works.
I have a Samsung Galaxy player 4.0. It's great, I love mine so much more than and iPod. Although I do like Android much more than iOS. The screen looks great, though not quite as high resolution as the retina display. It's cheaper than an ipod, larger screen, microSD card option, etc. I highly suggest it.
My problem with iTunes is its bloat.
With most players, I can run them in the background, play music, even copy shit to my iPod if it's not being converted from FLAC to MP3 along the way and still get away with playing a game.
With iTunes, I need to pretty much dedicate my computer to using it, and even then it takes way too long to start doing what I have it open to do. I can't even run Firefox or Chrome at the same time without bringing my system near the point of permanently shitting itself.

that and its interface is a hunk of garbage
I haven't had any of those problems described, and my performance in games is fine with iTunes in the background.
Yah I agree with Protocol7. iTunes didn't cause any issues with my Core 2 Duo, so your PC must be pretty bad.
