I shut down my computer normally earlier and when I turned it back on maybe a few hours ago Vista threw up its widespread blacK Screen of Death. If you don't know what it is, it's when Windows Vista or 7 makes it past the loading screen but before playing the startup sound and showing the welcome screen it gives you a black screen with a movable white cursor and doesn't go any further.
I've been googling the problem for the past hour and all the solutions I've found either don't work or I can't do them.
Some solutions I tried:
- Safe mode, but it does the same thing, like it normally does on KSODs
- Startup repair and system restore - didn't work, but after this, startup repair doesn't even show up
Solutions I'd like to try, but can't:
- Edit the registry to change some key to start explorer.exe
- Create a bootable CD that starts Vista's recovery environment, but I don't have any blank disks around
The hard drive is not failing and I'm sure it's just a problem with Windows. I'm running a Wubi installation of Ubuntu right now and all my Windows files are still there.
I would reformat but I have ~90 gb of important files, and I have nowhere to back them up to.
If you have a solution, just let me know.
Specs:
Dell Inspiron 1545
3 GB memory
130 GB HDD
2 GHZ dual core processor
When you are in the black screen do you have a mouse? if so press WINKEY+R and try to start explorer, otherwise you will probably have to reinstall Windows.
If you have cahnged explorer.exe you can't repair it.
too much porn on there.... You killed it
I had this and i had to re-install.
If you have cahnged explorer.exe you can't repair it.
I didn't.
You can if you just copy-paste it from another computer/Vista CD, but I don't have it. I do believe I have it in my Firefox downloads folder too from when I accidentally closed it once and needed to run it again.
By "Startup Repair" do you mean the thing where you put in the install disk and run the repair application on boot? That's brought me back from the brink of death before, so if that's not working you might be forced to reinstall.
Bump, does anyone else know of a solution? Here we are one month later and I'm still running Wubi.
I had that problem on Vista. I can't remember what I did to fix it, but I do remember it took so much work that I might as well have formatted.
But it is fixable.
There was a thread about it a long time ago that fixed it.
KSOD? :raise:

Do you have a link to it? I'd like to see it.

There's this fad we call "reading the OP." Try it sometime.
Upgrade to Windows 7.
KSOD is still BSOD. Please do not make up terms because they seem to suit your needs.

Just because you're an idiot who's never heard the phrase KSOD before doesn't mean OP has to change it for you

It's not a BSOD.

Moron.
Just reinstall. If you still have this disk its extremely easy to format and move on.

KSOD is a common term. Please do not be ignorant because you have no idea what you're talking about.
That's the stupidest acronym I've ever seen. Next to SQL being pronounced sequel.

U1: My Vista won't boot because of BSOD.
U2: What error does it give?
U1: _
You could also not be a lazy fuck and just write black screen of death.
I agree, why the hell would you use the last letter of black, then the first letters of all the other words?
But when it really comes down to it, who gives a fuck? (to put it bluntly)

Because KNFH isn't this easy to pronounce

So why not just say BSoD..?
Why does it matter?
That's not what System Restore is.
Apparently this is a virus. You need to change it back to using explorer.exe instead of what the virus is. Youtube has a few good videos.
So why not just say BSoD..?
That's a BLUE screen of death, which is very different in that it gives you error codes that usually help identify the problem. Black screen of death does no such thing. Therefor, KSoD is a perfectly fine acronym in that it saves the trouble of clarifying.
Or you could just write it out, but who cares.
Bump

I've seen the videos on YouTube about it, and I've tried the solutions in the ones I've seen. They haven't worked. It's not a virus in all cases either.
That's the stupidest acronym I've ever seen. Next to SQL being pronounced sequel.
BSoD is registered to Blue Screen of Ddeath, you ignorant moron. That isn't the problem here.

It's in the OP
System restore always works, Reset your computer while it's booting or press F8 before the boot sequence and restore it.
If you read the OP at all you would've known that I tried system restore and it didn't work. System restore is total crap anyway.
