Requirements: Between $350 and $400. Between 11" and 14" screen. She will just be browsing the web, emailing, and listening to music. So far, the HP DM1Z looks pretty good. I haven't bought a laptop in many years so I am not sure what's good and what's not.
Anything will work, really. I would go to Best Buy or whatever local computer store you have and get her to try out the keyboards and trackpads on the display models, since those are really going to be the only things that will make a difference to her.
I wouldn't buy HP. This graph is a couple years old, but from my experience in the last year (2 overheating HP laptops with broken screens in the family) it hasn't changed much.
The DM1 has gotten some good reviews, plus it has that power-efficient AMD CPU/GPU so heat isn't going to be an issue.
Asus are good.
For something that simple it's hard to go wrong. Whatever you get, install a fresh OS right away to get rid of all the bloatware it's sure to come with.
