Are there any alternatives to rosetta stone that are good? I've heard there are programs that are better than it and are free.

I've heard good things about [URL="www.duolingo.com"]Duolingo[/URL], I haven't used it much myself though. It is completely free. It's also been getting a lot more languages. Last time I tried it there were only like 3 languages to choose from, now there's many more.
