That was fast, got this in email just now...
iOS 4.2 is coming this November. With iOS SDK 4.2 beta, you can add exciting, new features to your apps including the capability to print directly from iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. iPad apps can now take advantage of multitasking, Game Center, iAd, and more. Download iOS 4.2 beta and iOS SDK 4.2 beta today. Make sure you install iOS 4.2 beta on dedicated development devices to test apps built with iOS SDK 4.2 beta. Continue to use iOS SDK 4.1 to build and compile apps you plan to submit to the App Store.

Apple's response to Andriod's larger market share
Lol no Also, 4.2 running great on my iPad. Doesn't support my Brother laser printer, but it's a beta, so...
Apple's response to Andriod's larger market share
what does that even have to do with any of this? android has little to none in the tablet market; the Galaxy S is an unoptimized piece of eugh. Google themselves have said that Android isn't optimized for tablets yet, and many of the marketplace apps won't support it
what does that even have to do with any of this? android has little to none in the tablet market; the Galaxy S is an unoptimized piece of eugh. Google themselves have said that Android isn't optimized for tablets yet, and many of the marketplace apps won't support it
android actually has quite a decent presence in the market or at least will. glaxy s isn't an unoptimied piece of shit(eugh?), but the tablet will suck ass because yeah just like google said android does not scale well at all, because google doesn't and never has intended for android as it is right now to be used on a tablet. you could say the same about iOS, actually. the iPad version is worlds apart from the iPhone/iPod version, and unlike Google, Apple actually placed very much needed requirements for applications. in order for an iPad app to be passed, it actually has to use 1024x768, not just be a bloated up iPhone app. [editline]11:16PM[/editline] also 2 things about galaxy s: the tablet is actually being called Galaxy Tab with the phones samsung fucked up with the memory system or something so you have to use a "hack" which is ok i guess seeing as samsung is so open about it but you really shouldn't have to
GalaxyTab is neat but it's no iPad.
So this can be downloaded now?
If you have an iPhone developer account.
How do i get one?
How do i get one?
You pay $100 to get your own dev account or a fraction for someone that's selling "udid slots"
This is just the first beta, don't expect it to be very stable.
unless it uses less battery (which it will probably not) I won't get it. It was already a mistake to update to ios4 on my itouch for me
Would someone be so nice to add my UDID to their account? I will give you $0.20 for doing it. :downs:
Anyone know if iOS 4.2 does SOMETHING about the iPhone 3G battery life? I noticed mine is dying a lot faster since 4.1, even after a full restore.
Current Changelog: * For iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad * Support for the iPad * AirPrint Wireless Printing with Print Center (Excludes iPhone 3G) * Import .ics calendar files directly for events * Text search on web pages * Stronger 3G connectivity in more places * 2 new fonts for Notes in Settings (Helvetica and Chalkboard) * New icon for Voice Memos (iPhone and iPod touch only) * Updated applications * AirPlay (replaces AirTunes, AirPlay will offer streaming of video, music, and photos over Wi-Fi) * More than 30 new keyboards and dictionaries, including Arabic, Greek, and Hebrew for iPad
Fuck this 3G, I'll live without print centre
This is just the first beta, don't expect it to be very stable.
It's surprisingly very stable. Epic Citadel often crashed during startup and generally ran a bit choppy using 3.2.1. 4.2 runs it much smoother and with zero crashes.
compared to 4.1, though? [editline]11:46PM[/editline] anyway is there any drastic noticeable change in 4.2? looks like a lot of relatively minor changes
I'm running it on my iPad though, so there's no 4.1. Some things I noticed: - connecting to Wi-Fi hotspots that require logins is awesome now, much faster. Bug: the info window pulls up in portrait regardless of orientation. - Wi-Fi stops working after a few hours of standby, icon stops showing up until reboot. - the springboard isn't 60fps smooth all the time anymore when opening and closing apps. Might be because I have 5 folders on my home menu, I don't know. - mute switch doesn't do shit. - multitasking bar lags open when not opened for a long time. - pinching to zoom in on embedded videos or in the YouTube app makes the video flicker, rotating the screen makes it go choppy for a second. Will update as I notice more.
ah right also i just realized yesterday day that i could scroll through the quick switch apps :downs:
Ooh. Can't wait to write my school reports from my ipod and Print. Presto!
4.2 beta 2 just came out.

Things I've noticed so far about beta 2 (will update as I find more) - printing finally works through sharing. It still doesn't directly connect to my Brother printer, but it goes through my laptop and prints successfully. - Mail doesn't crash anymore.
Yeah, just got the email that beta 2 is out. About to update my old 3G with it, release notes look promising. Also, Spyder:
For iOS 4.2 beta 2, testing printing requires: A printer that supports AirPrint, running the latest available firmware A printer shared through a Mac running Mac OS X 10.6.5 beta, available on the iOS developer page A printer shared through a PC running iTunes 10.1 beta, available on the iOS developer page
Does the printer support AirPrint?
Yeah, just got the email that beta 2 is out. About to update my old 3G with it, release notes look promising. Also, Spyder: Does the printer support AirPrint?
Nope. It's a year-old (I think) laser printer, from before the iPad even came out. The reason it works though is because I set up Bonjour Printing with the printer over the network. So it works nicely now. Question for you when you get it on your 3G: does it make the phone faster? And if so, is it actually faster than 3.1.2/3.1.3 or still slower?
i would update to the betas but I have no reason other than to have a nice new Voice Memos icon :v:
AirPrint isn't available on the 3G
Oh well. I think 3.1.3 is just the final firmware I'll install on my 3G. Anything newer isn't really worth it and just slows it down. I'm stuck with this piece of shit until 2013. Fuck.
