• What should I upgrade in my PC?

So I was going to do a PC upgrade this christmas as my old Core 2 Duo is starting to struggle to run some games these days. I have about £250 saved up so I thought I'd go ahead and do a big upgrade of my CPU, mobo and RAM. I've found this which my friend recommended to me and it does look pretty decent. http://www.cclonline.com/product-info.asp?product_id=50358&category_id=491&manufacturer_id=0&tid= Here are my current specs: Asus P5N-D motherboard 4gb DDR2 RAM AMD Radeon HD6850 1gb Corsair TX650w PSU Intel Core 2 Duo E4600 2.4ghz 320gb HDD But yeah, I want to run games pretty decently on fairly high settings. I don't care much for getting 200fps straight on every game on max with a stupid amount of AA. I'd be happy with running games at like 60fps with it on fairly high settings (IE Bad Company 2 and games like that) I can maybe save a little more if it'd get me something better, but £250 is about what my budget is. UK only please.
CPU/mobo/ram
If you want to keep the mobo, you can just get an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 Yorkfield 3.0GHz 12MB L2 Cache LGA 775 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115130 I have one and its fast as fuck and runs every game on max. Also, might want to get 4GB more of ram. And you should be pretty much running every game on max.

You could probably get a different motherboard, though, to knock off another £10 or so.

Sandy Bridge. [editline]13th December 2010[/editline] Save up for one of those fancy quadcore new i5's on 1155 and get a new motherboard.
You know nothing.
Whats wrong with getting a Core 2 Quad with his current setup? for the budget he has now, its perfect. "But yeah, I want to run games pretty decently on fairly high settings. I don't care much for getting 200fps straight on every game on max with a stupid amount of AA. The Q9650 is probably faster than some Core i5.
I know it's a good processor, but currently it's just not good for the price.
Well yeah, true. When I bought it the price was decent.
He actually got a nice mobo, so I would not be against him getting a Hyper 212+ and a Core 2 Quad, though I would not go for the extremly high end ones. Specs on mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131232 2x PCI-E slots. If he plan on CF later on, an overclocked C2Q will do the job.

Then if the mobo does support CF, he can go ahead and rig another 6850 to it in the future.
Yeah, I find it a shame to not use the mobo anymore.
This one is one of the few times when I do not recommend upgrading to a newer socket, simply because the mobo's good and a C2Q will do. I would get this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115057&cm_re=q8400-_-19-115-057-_-Product And this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065&cm_re=hyper_212%2b-_-35-103-065-_-Product Read up on it on sites like this: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=47089 The q6600 doesn't seem to be on Newegg anymore.
The q6600 doesn't seem to be on Newegg anymore.
Couldn't find it from any good retailers in the UK either. It's a shame, it's a great CPU for overclocking. (my dad got his to 3.6ghz on air and 4.2ghz watercooled)
I also heard that Intel will be releasing new sockets very soon. OP should wait a little more for when they're released. There's no point to update now.
wait for the legendary i9
wait for the legendary i9
nigga you dumb
wait for sandy bridge
I'm going to wait for Sandy Bridge and get the CPU, RAM, mobo and a new HDD then. Thanks for the help.
