It's not trying to be a tablet computer and apple never said it was, so stop complaining about it being to simple. It's not gonna replace anything like netbooks or smartphones, it adds a new category of devices that are completely for the enjoyment of media, games and productivity.
Of course it's not a failed device, apple has herds of sheep that will throw money at anything with its logo on it. The ipad itself is actually a neat idea, a larger ipod touch for more general home use, but it's the fact that it costs as much as a laptop and took all these years to develop that makes it a stupid move for apple.
Thanks for posting these videos. I don't think it's so stupid anymore. I still wouldn't pay over 200 dollars for it though.
It would be great if those dumbasses hadn't've put iPhoneOS on it.
It would be great if those dumbasses hadn't've put iPhoneOS on it.
True, OS X on a handheld device would've been pretty nice, or perhaps a custom OS with the best from both sides.
True, OS X on a handheld device would've been pretty nice, or perhaps a custom OS with the best from both sides.
Somewhere in the middle would work best.
base model without 3g, 500 bucks iPhoneOS No flash/HTML5 No.
I would be happy to own one if it cost the price it cost to make +10%
I don't really like or hate the iPad but there's obviously going to be some serious bandwagoning because it's a new product from Apple. People can say "it's just a big iPod Touch", and it's true, but with statements like that you're ignoring all the new possibilities introduced by the larger form factor. I've noticed that now it's actually released a lot more critics are less sceptical about it as new apps are coming out and showing what devs can do when given more screen space, and how the experience is different from its smaller counterpart, the iPod Touch. Right now people are just looking at the hardware differences but I think soon enough the apps will define the difference.
Exactly what I've been saying all along about a new category, it's not an iPhone, and it's not a laptop. It's in between.
All these videos just seem to be illustrating exactly how much of a big ipod touch it is. Same useless novelty apps, all coded in the same way, apps which are still nowhere near as productive as their desktop counterparts, adjusted for the bigger screen. Sure, you could argue that the big screen makes it easier to play games like geometry wars on it, or web browse, but by using the bigger screen as an example you're essentially using the very argument that it's a big ipod touch to back up your opinion. What I find insulting is that they didn't even go to many lengths to disguise that this was a phone OS, designed for the iphone. Look at the youtube app, the bottom menus are surrounded on both sides by acres of unused space. Look at the slide to unlock prompt, it's exactly the same size as the one on the iphone, surrounded by that black fucking space. Look at the springboard, while you're able to fit a few more icons on it everything's still surrounded by unused space. The whole thing, even the software, looks like they stretched the iPod touch, so much so that it's quite jarring to see an app make full use of the space. The games are just terrible 'HD' versions of previous incarnations, even the ones that aren't the same as the ones on the smaller devices are all the same casual shit we've been seeing for years. It's a big ipod touch, there's no new control methods or shit like that. If they had actually made a proper tablet it would've been really great, if it had a proper OS it would be fucking awesome, apple always make things which are incredibly slick, and combined with the potential of a fully fledged OS it would be great. The iPad is depressingly unimaginative, woefully unambitious and terribly boring. What's most heartbreaking about it though is that although there's no conceivable market for it, that it has no point, and it's more redundant than the macbook air, people still flocked and bought it in droves. Why? Not because they're all excited about the potential of the product or anything like that, they bought it because THEY'RE FUCKING IDIOTS. Every person who owns a iPad and is openly defending it is trying to fend off buyers remorse by accusing other people of not understanding what the point of the device is, because they don't want to admit that they bought the most useless gadget ever to be shat out by a multinational corporation.
You mean like a netbook? The gadget that trounces this POS in every conceivable area?
and is 80% less expensive then the Ipad?
You mean like a netbook?
Sort of. I mean, It's for people who want the convenience of a simple device, just wanting to chill and browse the web or go on some apps. I mean, you have to admit it looks a lot more calming and easier to browse the web on websites like facepunch where a lot of scrolling is needed, as well as a screen to see the stuff big enough. It's an easy device to use, no load up times, instant web browsing without waiting for a huge OS to load up. But that's not all it features it will feature unique stuff via the apps people make for it. Art apps will be awesome because it'll be like a touch screen drawing tablet. In the middle where it has the main goal of casual usage.
Art apps will be awesome because it'll be like a touch screen drawing tablet. [editline]03:34AM[/editline]
Read the whole post and get off your high horse bandwagon.
I did read the whole post, I was just being a little cruel there, my apologies.
You mean like the thousands of image editing applications already available for proper tablet PCs with full featured OSes?
Oh god damn fuck up with your "you mean" shit. I own an iphone, and it is in no way convenient to browse the web, in fact it's frustrating with a small screen however it's easy to navigate. And no, I was just mentioning other good use of it. [editline]03:36AM[/editline]
I did read the whole post, I was just being a little cruel there, my apologies.
You obviously didn't considering I ninja'd you when you quoted another part of the same post.
The load up times is the one good point of the iPad that I can see. The lightweight phone OS would make it easier to sit down at a wifi hotspot and check some emails or something. But, then again, that's what you would use your iphone/ipod touch for, devices which are far more portable and more comfortable to carry around than the iPlate. (Comparing it to a plate here as it's impractical and somewhat pointless to carry around with you, and there's a massive fucking chance of it breaking)

It is a product that is for some people, but for others it isn't. But I think people are going a tad to far saying only stupid people will buy it, because it does have uses, and this is very clear which is why it frustrates me when people can't stop a think before jumping on the lol shit product bandwagon. [editline]03:43AM[/editline]
(Comparing it to a plate here as it's impractical and somewhat pointless to carry around with you, and there's a massive fucking chance of it breaking)
Cases, and plenty of people carry laptops around perfectly.
Hopefully the new iPhone OS 4.0 will really give the iPad the edge and tools it needs to be a true competitor in the netbook market.
True but as I mentioned it's really frustrating with a small iphone screen to browse the web.
Then you buy a netbook. The clue's in the name. Having a huge slab to carry around with abilities comparable to the iphone, just with a bigger screen seems pointless. If you're going to have something that big, buy a netbook. Why faff around with a walled garden phone OS when you can have an essentially fully featured laptop? Obviously, the startup time element comes into play here, but to be honest you're only gonna bother pulling out your ipad if you're sat down with say a cup of coffee, it's far too annoying to simply pull out to check if you've got an email or something, which is what you would do with an iphone. If you're only gonna use it while stationary and in a comfortable position, why not buy a laptop? it's more comfortable to hold and type on, and it'll have a widescreen display rather than a stupid 4:3 thing, which would provide a nicer movie watching experience.

This is how I see it, and it's going to be the last thing I say in the matter in this thread: Laptops/Netbooks: Great for long usage, such as times with lots of typing or lots of software required. iPad: Great for casual usage, such as simple browsing on websites like forums and facebook where you'll need a decent sized screen to prevent lots of pinching at the screen while keeping the smooth swiping mechanics. iPhone: Great for minimal usage such as checking an email where size of the screen wouldn't really matter much. This is how I see the iPad "in the middle" like I mentioned before.
Then you buy a netbook. The clue's in the name. Having a huge slab to carry around with abilities comparable to the iphone, just with a bigger screen seems pointless.
In your opinion. For people that only want to check their email or twitter or watch a movie it seems like a nice thing. Also I don't get why people have to get so worked up about a device like this, if you don't like it fine, but you don't have to call everyone that has a different opinion that you a 'fucking idiot.'
Cases, and plenty of people carry laptops around perfectly.
If people carry laptops around perfectly why do they need to take an iPad, a gadget with less storage space, less applications, a more uncomfortable typing experience, and an awkward widescreen viewing experience with them instead of a laptop? Not to mention the arbitrary lack of a webcam or other features, like an integrated card/usb slot. [editline]03:52AM[/editline]
2 words: Casual Usage.
Are you implying you can't casually use an laptop/netbook? Or an iphone? Or any smartphone for that matter.
Are you implying you can't casually use an laptop/netbook? Or an iphone? Or any smartphone for that matter.
Not can't. Easier. Check my last post.
For people that only want to check their email or twitter
There's this awesome new thing called an iphone, it's only been out for a few years now, so you misht not have heard of it. You can check your twittter and emails with it, isn't that awesome!
or watch a movie
Widescreen movies on 4:3 displays are horrible. Watching a movie on a netbook would be far nicer you have more of the screen filled with the picture, and you don't have to jump through a bunch of hoops (itunes/itunes store) to get it on there.
I agree with PieClock. Lets say you're at home, watching TV in another room, not completely confined to the area where your computer is, and want to browse the net during commercial breaks. If you had the pad on a table, or underneath the couch or whatever, you could just pull it out and relax. You could easily use it around the house, casually and not worry about where you are going to put it because of it's size, because it's your house (or friends, whatever). The Iphone/pod touch on the other hand, I would completely agree would be more convenient if you are out at a cafe or out on the go, it's easier to use out in public or in a car.

I don't do very much of either so I wouldn't consider buying one but I can see why some people would find it useful.
Although personally I would take the Ipad, and find room for myself to put it even if I was out on the go, because I like the bigger screen.

While boot time is an issue, and I admit that, it's the only thing that the ipad does better than a proper laptop, and only then because its OS is so limited.
