My dad just wiped his computer and freshly installed a new os. Its XP home edition. Neither him nor I have any idea how to setup a connection. Before he wiped it it worked just fine. Also before we wiped it the internet worked just fine.
plug in the cable
in cmd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
if you get a 169.x.x.x address it isn't working or your router is not doing dhcp, you should get a 192.168.something

I feel very stupid but what is an ethernet adapter?
The thing you plug the cable into usually. Though most don't need drivers as Windows has one/ uses a generic one anyway.
Ok i figured out what an ethernet adapter is. How do i find out which driver i need?

I repair computers quite often, and XP has never had drivers for their ethernet adapters, it's really annoying. Vista and 7 do, though.

Network adapters arent on mine
I'm assuming that your computer is a pre-built? Google the name of the computer along with "Network Driver"
So for example: "HP Pavilion 2347d network driver"
Yeah. Its my dads and he doesnt know how to build one. Ok I will try this
Purchase discrete network adapter and install the drivers using the included disk? problem solved? Only do this if you're both stupid.

Change all your computers to the same workgroup, or just make sure they're all using the default as "workgroup". enable file sharing and discovery. then right click on any folder on the computer and click properties, go to the sharing tab and enable sharing and allow users to change files.
