Hi guys,
System first:
Gigabyte GA970 UD3 motherboard
8350 at stock clock
XFX 850W Pro
Sapphire 290x at stock clock, 16.5.3 Drivers
Team Dark 8GB 1600Mhz (4gbx2)
Win7 64-bit Ultimate
Problem surfaced the other day while playing Planetside 2. With no history of crashes, etcetera, my screen went black and I was nearly deafened by a short, ~.5 second loop of the audio that was playing at the moment. No logs in event viewer, but it seemed to boot fine. Of note, I had recently updated from 15.12 to 16.5.3. However, I recently rolled back to 15.12 aaaaand no bueno, still.
Thinking the worst, I ran Furmark. Half an hour, full load, no crashes at ~65 degrees celsius. Pretty sure the card itself is okay, though I know you're supposed to run it for longer.
Also ran the CPU mark part of Furmark for a while, no crashes.
At this point, I'm beginning to suspect my RAM or motherboard are on their way out, but I was hoping for some confirmation or other theorizing before replacing them.
Regular browsing and computer usage runs just fine, even using Photoshop or Maya. However, the last time I tried to play any game was Rocket League, and my computer crashed practically as soon as I clicked the 'play' button.
Might have fixed it? Turns out you shouldn't run an 8+6 pin video card from one 8 pin on a modular PSU. Thing was melted into the socket and I had to split it apart with a knife. Swapped it to run separate 8 pins from the PSU to the 8+6 pin on the video card, and it seems to be working now. Seems. Possibly. crossing my fingers.
