So, for the past couple of months my Xbox has been giving me two red rings. Which I soon learned meant it was overheating. This surprised me seeing as how my Xbox has plenty of room to ventilate, and it only happens when it's running a game. So, I opened up the window above it, and placed the power brick on the window seal so it could stay cool. Next I placed a fan in front of it, and took the intercooler
off. That worked until about a week ago. Now, I can't play any disks. without it shutting down after ten minutes saying it is overheating. Yesterday my friend Pj and I opened it up (We got the first half of the white shell off, we didn't have a small enough screw driver to open it further.) and there was a shit ton of dust. I vacuumed it and got all the dust off I could see, we left the shell off and plugged it back in. Ten minutes later I'm playing it and blam! It overheated. I know it's really not overheating, or something. So Facepunch, how do I fix this?
Other things I should include:
When it 'overheats' the Xbox and powerbrick are both cool/ish to the touch.
It only happens when running a game
When did you buy that 360?
This was an RROD replacement from a year or two ago.
Buy some compressed air, and clean that bitch out.
Why do everyone recommend compressed air really? All it does is move the dust around, has never worked or helped me.
Put a vacuum cleaner near the went, that always work for me

I basically did that yesterday, and it still wouldn't work.
You need a Torx 10 screwdriver to open it fully, There are really cheap on ebay just search "Xbox 360 opening tool" then open it up and clear out all the dust using compressed air and check all the fans work and spin correctly.

We have a set of those, just none of them will undo the little black screws in the middle.
You don't need to undo those, Undo the 5 or 6 long screws around the edge then flip the console over and pull the casing off.

Oh wow, Pj had all those off and then got butt-hurt and put them all back in. Okay, I'll go take them out.

Yeah, Just the screws with the larger tops and longer spindles.
My avatar could be telling the truth in this case

It will live, It hasn't died yet.
Okay, I have the cover off, now what?
So you can now see all the components?
So you can now see all the components?
Yes, yes I can.
Blow off any dust you can see using compressed air or just blow the dust off.

In other words vacuume it out to remove the dust?
I would keep it open and put a fan next to it, like DJY1991 with his PC but it might not work. If it die's get the New model, no more red rings.

yes
In other words vacuume it out to remove the dust?
I wouldn't vacuum the inside of it.
Okay, it's vacuumed. Now what? I want this machine to work once more!

Put it back together.
Why not?
I just wouldn't personally, But that's just me.

I did not put it back together, but I plugged it all up.

Taking Xonax's advice and not putting it back together, placing a fan next to it and running it like that.
It will probably get even hotter like when you run a PC with the side of the case off.

So, I NEED to put it all back together?
You could try it with the case off for a bit I suppose but if it does get too hot just put the case back on.
Okay, it is all plugged up. I'll be back if it didn't work
So is it working?
It worked for a while, now instead of overheating it fucking freezes instead. Around the same time and everything.
