After POST, I get a disc read error. The HDD is intact but I can't access any data on it. I tried flashing the BIOS already. Any ideas?

Try using Hiren's Boot CD and booting up Mini XP in order to access your files. I'm not sure if you can run chkdsk from Mini XP but it's worth a shot.
Does the HDD make a scratching noise like fingernails on a chalkboard?
Just boot up an Ubuntu Live CD. You can likely recover the data that way by dumping it to an external.
