I am need of a new router, but I have no clue as to where to start looking. I have a wrt54g[?] right now and it is constantly making me unplug it and plug it back in. All of our devices are using 802.11 g or are wired. I have 3-6 hosts on my network depending on the time of day. Can anyone suggest me some good routers? My linksys worked great up until recently so I would like to stay with them, but if there is a really good router by another brand then let me know.

[editline]01:39AM[/editline] In any case, what you should do is flash it with tomato. As long as it's not a hardware fault, this fw should fix most of your problems. Not to mention it has a shitton of functionality. [editline]01:41AM[/editline] Key thing to note: This will not work on Linksys WRT54G/GS v5 or newer WRT54G/GS routers.
Once or twice a day usually.
Once or twice a day usually.
I have the exact same thing with a Netgear router.
It doesn't stay connected to the internet, and the modem is fine. And I have a WRT54G2 by the way.
I got a D-Link DIR-615 Wireless N router for $40 CAD when it was on sale. I am very impressed with its speed and range on my laptop, and the average ping of most multiplayer games have also lowered by ~5-10ms on wired networks when comparing to my old D-Link wireless G router

I'll do it tomorrow.
If you disconnect for only a short time, it's probably windows looking for new connections. Use the connection software that came with your adapter, it won't look for connections every few minutes and lag you out on games. Or is it overheating? If it is, the wireless light will go out temporarily while it cools down. I have that problem if I try to transfer a large number of files to another wired pc from wireless.
Are you using Bittorrent at all?
Yes, on my computer.
very nice if you want it to do out of the box stuff http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833320026 or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124190 if you like to toy around and have nice fast speeds, flash with tomato or wrt-dd http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124344&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction&AID=10446076&PID=3640869&SID=skim629X1198 any router that looks like that is shit avoid it at all costs
Would you recommend this one John? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127215&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction&AID=10446076&PID=3640869&SID=skim629X1198
Quick question: Can you use any router with your isp, or do they have to be certain ones.
Quick question: Can you use any router with your isp, or do they have to be certain ones.
Yeah pretty much just connect it to the modem. Also I would get your own modem also. Modems you buy yourself are so much better than the ones ips gives you.

Well my parents are tired of having to mess with the router so they just said to get the best router I can find.
yeah that is great so are any of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=asus+router&x=0&y=0
Most don't care they have a modem, Verizon fios is starting to integrate the modem into the router but you can always get a modem externally
There shouldn't be a modem with a FiOS installation. Unless you mean the ONT, which is the box outside your house and a port in the wall that connects to that. But there's obviously nothing like that being put into the router. As for modems in routers, every router company nowadays implements PPPoE (which modems use to connect via username and password) into their router, so just about any router would work. Anyway, for router recommendations, I'd suggest first to upgrade your firmware. Then if that doesn't work, I'd check what type of router you specifically have. If you've got WRT54G, try a WRT54GL. If you've got WRT54GL, try WRT54G. However, if your parents want to upgrade to 802.11n sooner or later, you'd want to look at N routers instead.
Just try flashing the router before you go out to buy another one.
The WRT54G2 is a great router for a reasonable (when I bought it) $59.99
I just flashed with DDWRT so Ill check back in a bit.
