If I remember correctly the game is free but you buy characters with that gold. I believe they have free character rotations.
Steam version currently is not free.
It's $40 with up to $40 microtransactions on top of it
lmfao microsoft what was even the point of making a Steam version, with prices and practices like that you're not getting any extra sales

Maybe it's just there so people see "Oh neat Killer Instinct" see that, find out about the free version then go get it from their platform? If the $100 fee to publish applies to big companies it wouldn't be that big a loss to do so...
The gold exists to unlock colours, costumes, etc. earlier than normal.
This Steam version is basically the definitive edition: all characters are unlocked from the get go, as are their Retro costumes.
The only gameplay-related thing it can buy is stuff for the singleplayer mode, but even then, progression in that mode is perfectly normal.
This game is great. While the limited cross-play is a bummer, it's a great game regardless.
I uninstalled that game from my computer thinking i would be able to download it on steam, but turn out the game isn't free on steam and there no cross-save.
So i have to download the game (45gb) again on the horrible thing that is Windows Store.
No kidding, that software is the worse thing on earth, you can't limit the bandwidth, and sometime, the download crashes forcing you to download everything again.

I mean a majority of people who were interested in the game already have it for free on Windows store or have already paid for it on Windows platforms
