Disabling keyboard hotkeys and reverting them back to function keys

I wasn't really sure how to describe this in a concise manner.
I got a new computer having previously used a laptop and bought myself a keyboard to go along with it. It's an el-cheapo Logitech short-stroke (like laptop keys) that is pretty basic. The problem is the keyboard doesn't have function keys (i.e. F1-F12) and instead has multimedia keys. If you want to use the function keys you're supposed to push a special function alt key at the same time to use them only this doesn't seem to work. Presumably you have to download some incredibly bloated Logitech software to go with it to do so but does anyone know how to force the multi-media keys to be function keys without some program?
your best bet is probably to go with the logitech software, often how exactly key binds are implemented can be annoyingly variant for laptops. Setpoint isn't so bad, i have it running now and it's barely using resources.

You'll have to use Setpoint. Don't worry though, it's not bloated at all.
