If this fails like Bulldozer did I really don't see how AMD can recover.

I'm sure AMD has learned their lesson though, and with Jim Keller having been the lead behind it (the same guy who helmed the development of the amazing K8 platform), I don't really see it doing too terrible unless Intel just decides to drastically drop prices on its competing processors both current and in the future. Intel has been sitting on its ass, but I don't doubt that they will retaliate in a massive way if they actually feel challenged. And that's a good thing in my mind, as having competition only tends to drive more innovation and benefits, meaning every party involved also benefits.
I don't think Intel will have to retaliate. The Zen's a bit cheaper but you HAVE to buy a motherboard also which is going to offset the savings some. It's the first time AMD has switched socket type in like a decade so going with AMD has always been super cheap to do, until now. Now when AMD makes a new CPU after Zen that uses AM4, that's when Intel will have to have something to compete with
