Friend of mine swears up and down that a Tablet PC is not the same as an "Android Tablet". This doesn't make sense to me because by definition an Android tablet is still a Tablet PC. What say you, FP?
Your friend is right. You're wrong. An Android tablet is a tablet PC, but reverse is not true. An Android tablet is a specific tablet. EG All geometric squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares. [editline]6th June 2012[/editline] All Catholics are Christian but not all Christians are Catholics. All flatscreen TVs are TVs but not all TVs are flatscreens. All wood floors are wood but not all floors are wood. K I'm done.
Yeah, it depends how he asked the question but Android tablet is more specific than Tablet PC.
'Tablet PC' generally implies a tablet running Windows. (I said implies, not that a Tablet PC is a Windows tablet)
'Tablet PC' generally implies a tablet running Windows.
That's like saying "PC" implies a desktop running windows.
That's like saying "PC" implies a desktop running windows.
To be fair, when someone says "PC" my mind usually goes to a computer running windows, if they're referring to a computer running OSX they'll usually call it a Mac, and I've always seen people refer to their computer running Linux as a "Linux" too, rather than "PC".
in 2012 PC means windows or linux PC no longer means Personal computer in the same way Hacking now means "lol i know your password"
'Tablet PC' generally implies a tablet running Windows.
PC = x86-32 or x86-64.
PC = x86-32 or x86-64.
Or, you know, a personal computer.
Or, you know, a personal computer.
Or you know, strictly PC compatible. Its a shame IBM never did get that trademark, it would clear quite a few things up.
That's like saying "PC" implies a desktop running windows.
No, Tablet PC implies Windows as it was a name Microsoft used for tablets running Windows. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Tablet_PC
No, Tablet PC implies Windows as it was a name Microsoft used for tablets running Windows. And then look at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tablet_PC_(disambiguation)

That's my point, I'm not saying it isn't a tablet PC, but the name implies a Windows based tablet.

Google isn't a local computer shop.
Yes, let me drive to a nearby PC shop with gas prices as they are. Or, I can do a simple google search and see that almost the whole first page is talking about tablets of any OS.

The word PC does imply a Windows based operating system. To deny that is stupid. When I hear "tablet", I think "Android, iPad, HP Touchpad, BB Playbook" and so forth. When I hear "tablet PC", I think of the Acer Iconia Tab W500. Same as any old Android tablet in size, except it runs Windows. With that said, I think that the term "tablet PC" still encompasses the "tablet" category, and vice versa - however the terms have implications that can seriously confuse some people.
And there we go 'tablets' not 'tablet PCs'
... 'Tablet' is short for 'Tablet PC'. If you really want to get anal about it, google Tablet PC.
... 'Tablet' is short for 'Tablet PC'. If you really want to get anal about it, google Tablet PC.
But again, what inconspicious was referring to was the implied meanings of each words that I describe above.
I usually think PC means Windows-based computers also (mainly because of Apple); however the 'tablet' in front of it changes it completely.
Right, but PC usually means a desktop or a laptop, and by appending PC to the word Tablet it implies that the tablet has the same functionality as a desktop or laptop computer.
Right, but PC usually means a desktop or a laptop, and by appending PC to the word Tablet it implies that the tablet has the same functionality as a desktop or laptop computer.
You'd think that but apparently that's not how it is. I'm just going with what I think and what google/wiki/BB says.
When someone mentions 'Tablet PC' to me, I think of something like this:

I'm not trying to be awkward or a smartarse, but the term 'PC compatible' is still an important one and shouldn't lose its meaning. I think its even more important to keep this distinction in mind now that we have so many processor architectures and operating systems on tablets.
Whenever I hear "tablet" or "tablet PC" I used to think of an actual tablet. Now whenever I hear "tablet" or "tablet PC" I automatically assume they're referring to the pitiful excuses for oversized phones (iPads, Android "tablets", etc). If you say "Windows tablet" or "Linux tablet", then I'll know you're referring to a true tablet.
The word PC does imply a Windows based operating system. To deny that is stupid.
You can't back up an assertion like that by listing what you think the terms stand for. Honestly I find the quoted statement immensely more stupid than what you're calling people out for. We come from different backgrounds. When I think Tablet, I think about Android, IOS, Windows, and when I think Tablet PC, I think about Android, IOS, and Windows too. You're not a stupid idiot because you think differently than that.
and I've always seen people refer to their computer running Linux as a "Linux" too, rather than "PC".
That's kinda cute. Everyone I know would call it a Linux computer, a Linux server or a Linux box though. What I gather from this thread is that people should be more specific instead of relying on their interlocutor having the exact same tech background as theirs.
Right and everyone who agrees with me is wrong too because I made a list :downs:
I'm not saying everyone you agree or disagree with is wrong or right about anything. I'm saying it's stupid to call everyone who denies your point of view stupid. Especially when you back up that statement by purely subjective statements about what you think when you hear the terms.
