So this computer originally had Windows XP on it. It got UBER SLOW, so I placed Ubuntu 9.10 over it. Significant speed increase. Then I upgraded to 10.04. Even better. A month goes by, it boots and nothing appears. I go back to 9.10 install and upgrade again, same problem. Burned a 10.04 disk... same problem. And same thing with 10.10. So I put arch on it and no matter what I do it won't configure correctly. I rage, burn a Windows XP .iso from the internet, boot it up and after I press "any key" it sits at a black screen. It's OBVIOUSLY lit up...
WTF do I do...

we've gone over this before. you just don't understand how to follow a wiki. we told you how to do everything with arch but you wouldn't listen

I just re-installed following the wiki. Configured it ALL perfectly, and it still won't ping google...

:colbert:
it works on my laptop. lol
Downloading Windows XP from the internet is illegal.
inb4 ban.
I had a similar problem with a old computer, it wouldn't boot, not even the OS installed in the HDD. I fixed it by removing all the computer parts and putting it together one by one until it boots. The problem was a faulty RAID controller. Try checking for faulty hardware.

That's what I was thinking. Did it when 10.04 stopped working. Didn't help...

Not if he's using a legit key and can prove it.
I just re-installed following the wiki. Configured it ALL perfectly, and it still won't ping google...
then you didn't configure it right.
run dhcpcd as root and come back to me on that
[editline]02:47AM[/editline]
and while you're at it add that to your init script
ughhhhhh
Right... And it now hangs just after start up.
Can't get to anything. Can boot ubuntu up on that disk/install it but 9.10 = shit compared to 10.10/10.04.
I just want to put windows on it now and say fuck it.
And I do have a key. Step dad had multiple computers at his old job and they had some unlimited install key. Using that for it.
some unlimited install key. Using that for it.
I'm extremely certain that it doesn't work like that.

You're wrong. If you buy a computer with Windows XP preinstalled, that OEM license can be used as long as the computer has no significant modifications to it (i.e. you can't use it if you swap out every single piece of hardware, but you can use it if you swap out video cards and hard drives if they break). Provided, of course, you bought a valid OEM license, which because the OP said the computer came with Windows XP, he did. I'm sure if Microsoft knew that you did that they would be all like "ooh you can't do that" but in reality they don't care because they would've given you the disk anyway/reactivated Windows for you and they couldn't care less because they already HAVE your money.
tl;dr People who say OP will be banned are ignorant fucks because they don't understand how a software license works; they're more concerned with Microsoft's stance on how you can't copy the disk when in reality Microsoft doesn't actually care.

This.
Basically the software is free, but you need a valid license to use it. Otherwise downloading the Windows ISO gets you like... a 90 or 120 day trial..? That's hardly warez, folks.

Doing the activation period for Windows XP SP3 and above was the best thing they've done I think - especially if you only need a fresh install for a few days.

Any clues? I just took it back apart, checked all the connections. Everything is fine inside. I can't figure out what is wrong with it...

CPU's the only thing I didn't remove.
Excuse the double post...
I'm using Darik's Boot and Nuke on the HDD now. Then I'll attempt windows xp again. I tried Debian and got the same issue as Windows XP.
