Well basically my sister got a virus on her laptop before I could even get an anti virus on it, I had to wipe the HDD cause it blocked all access to the internet, USB ports, esata ports, SD card reader, DVD/CD drive, and windows firewall... So I slapped a webroot system erase in there since that still works when the OS hasn't booted up and I shredded the HDD. Now my dad is mad at me cause he says laptops use a certain manufacturer OS and I'm just wondering if this is true or not since my dad hasn't really done anything computer-wise for about 6 years now.
He was probably talking about the recovery partition, containing a legit preactivated windows installation

So I can buy a regular copy of windows 7 instead of paying toshiba $160 to fix it?
Windows is designed to work on practically anything, a regular copy will work fine
All windows copies are the same and you didn't lose anything permanent from wiping the drive. You could've lost some drivers, but they should be easy to obtain if not effortless.

Well turns out the 1st wipe didn't shred the virus so I'm doing a 3 shred process to see if that does it. And thanks again for letting me know that any disc will work/
the only thing I know is that keys are tied to the laptop it's stuck to, otherwise you can install with any disc
