Is it worth having a HD 5970 if i have a 20" 1650x1050 monitor?

Definitely worth it. You might even get playable performance with ssaa on some newer games.

microstutter is fucking horrible but I hear it's not as bad on multi GPU cards

Not worth it, because others cards can do the same job as 5970 for less expensive, for your screen resolution. An 5970 is for people who have an 30" monitor (2560x1600) or Eyefinity setup.

I've heard it doesn't perform much better than the 480.

Unless you're super into future proofing, get a 5870 or a 470.
