Isn't this kind of like saying that Dr Robotnik was originally a kindly old scientist named Dr. Kintobor, and was turned evil in an explosion that also turned Sonic blue, because that was an explanation given by an official source for their first game?
Jeez, why is everyone so negative about this? It's just a fun little bit of trivia written to be humorous by whoever wrote the manual. Getting upset about its ~legitimacy~ and ~place in canon~ is so pointless. It's not like the Mario universe has any kind of hard canon.

Listen you bastard, i have written hundreds of papers and thousands - THOUSANDS - of pages of investigation into the Mario lore and I do not appreciate the bastardization of a beloved franchise. I will be contacting my lawyers to remove this website posthaste.
