Since I made that "Ask an Icelander anything" thread I've noticed that there were more Icelanders here than I thought. So in this thread, I want to find out how many we are.

I'm not Icelandic, but i think my great grandfather was Icelandic though.
I understand your language pretty well, since it's almost like Norwegian, and Norwegian is almost like Swedish.
I just spent a week in your country, was stuck there for a while because of this inpronouncable volcano.

Just noticed how iceland's terrain is very similar to how Rohan looks in the Lord of the Rings movies.

Well not exactly, but if you pronounce the text you can understand at least 70% of all the words.

I can often understand my swedish friends to be honest. It's quite similar.
A word i remember that was similar was.. fiskur. It's just "fisk" in swedish right ?

It is. When I was in Norway, a friend of mine asked me if Icelandic was just putting "-ur" behind Norwegian words. In some ways, he was right.

Our guide said they filmed some Lord of the Rings scenes in Iceland at the very start before moving to New Zealand.
It reminded me of the Scottish Highlands, but without any proper trees.
We were told that by the guide that should we ever get lost in a forest in Iceland, we need only stand up ^^

Yup, pronouncing it does help a lot.
And even if it's nowhere close to Swedish, it is still quite similar to Norwegian and Swedish if you compare it to other languages.
