Man I remember sinking SO many hours into Medieval: Total War in my early adolescence
its so fuckin cool that u can play the original total war games on steam now. i thought they would never get a digital release
spent over soooo many hours playing all the total war games, literally a favorite hands down
Empire and Napoleon would have to be the best for me due to its era, medieval 2 and rome coming up second.
havent had the chance to play attila yet, if im honest didnt like Rome 2 much, so Atilla's release didnt do much for me
Attila is okay, personally. Every time I find a negative, I find a positive.
The battles are intense, very entertaining, and will tend to rely more on raw tactics/skill rather than the stats of your units for the most part.
The campaign, however, is very micromanagement heavy, and is not recommended for those who had issues with Rome 2's micromanagement.
I would recommend it for anyone who's interested in the era and doesn't mind too much of a challenge when it comes to early/mid game campaign. The Last Roman DLC is a definite must-have, as the Roman Expedition is extremely unique and very fun, as are the Franks and Ostrogoths.

except that rome 2 didn't really have any micromanagement aside from battles themselves? I mean they removed armies without a general and micromanaging who governs what province, etc. from rome 1

I'm talking about food supplies and food supplies affecting public orderand the variety of diplomatic options that some considered were "too many" (I disagree but w/e)
What would be the best one to get? Im low on money and can only get one

For raw "jump in and fuck about" gameplay, Medieval 2, for sure.
For "I'm okay with pants-on-head retarded AI since it's hilarious when it fucks up", Empire
For "I'm a strategist and want some hardcore fights" Napoleon with the DarthMod...mod
For "Just fuck me up fam", Attila
Shogun 2 is an excellent entry into the series. Overall very refined gameplay without to much nonsense, it is certainly not the most intricate game in the series but it is nicely polished and has just solid mechanics. Furthermore it offers a lot of atmosphere and the japan setting is quite nicely done. Just a very enjoyable experience.
Napoleon is also pretty good but it kind of lacks a grand campaign of sorts but the battles are really amazing.
Anything prior to Empire has not aged that well, a lot of mechanics are just a hassle to handle. Like diplomacy or warfare, especially Medieval 2 where you have to manage tons of agents and whatnot. Also you will always fight sieges most of the time.
My recommendation would be Shogun 2 or Fall of the Samurai if you like the western influence and that period of time.
