Use a stopwatch (most cell phones have a stopwatch feature) to time your computer's restart time.
1. First close all running applications (not counting stuff that runs in the background)
2. If your computer requires a password on startup, temporarily disable it
3. Start the timer the moment you click "Restart"
4. Stop the timer the moment you're back at your desktop
I'm interested in how different hardware and operating systems compare.
My time was 1'06" which is probably easy to beat. I'm running

OS: Windows 7
CPU: i7 975XE
Memory: 6GB DDR3 @ 1600
HDD: 1TB 7200rpm using SATA3 port
00:46 minutes (46 seconds)
56 Sec. I am on a 3 week old fresh install. After while it slows to about 1min.
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64B
CPU: Q6600 C2Q
Memory: 6GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2
HDD1: Western Digital Caviar 160Gb 7200Rpm
About 15...fresh install of win7 64 bit and a SSD...
Slightly skewed result for me. 2 mins 21 seconds.
2 x Opteron 8356's
16gb RAM
MSI K9ND Speedster
HD5770
2 x 250gb Samsung F1's RAID0 (nVRAID)
Win7 Pro x64 / Server 2K8R2 (same time for both)
The POST RAM check took 1min 50seconds - the disadvantage of ECC memory.
47.5 seconds :colbert:
Q6600 @ Stock
Asus P5N-E SLi
2x2GB G.Skill PC2-6400
2x 1TB Samsung F3 in RAID0
1x 500GB Samsung F1 on it's own Delock RAID controller
OS: Windows 7 64bit ultimade
30.3 seconds on my current HDD setup, and roughly 45 on my other.
Windows 7 Pro 64-bit
MSI P55-GD80
Intel i5 (OC'd to 4.0)
4x2GB G.Skill DDR3-1600
2x200GB HDDs in RAID 0 (testing it out to see how I like it. Normally I use a single 500GB drive as my boot)
Sapphire Radeon 5850
56 seconds
Windows 7 Home 32-bit
AMD Phenom II Dual Core
2x2GB DDR2
320 HDD
2m 25s
Windows XP 64-bit
Q6600 @ 3.0GHz
P5N32-e SLI
6GB DDR2 6400
System drive is a 500GB Seagate Barracuda
The majority of the boot time was taken up by my Dell PERC 5/i RAID controller initializing, has five 500GB disks in RAID 5 on it.
57 Seconds
Windows 7 32-Bit
Intel Pentium D 805 @ 3.0GHz
2GB DDR2 800mhz
500GB Western Digital @ 7200 RPM
Last time I formatted I put all my stuff back on and installed everything I needed and tried to see how fast I could get it to boot.
I think I got about 17 seconds :D
But now it takes about 35 seconds D:
Around 40 seconds, because my RAID controller takes 20 seconds to initialize, and USB controller eats up another 5 seconds or so.
Just over 2 minutes.
Windows 7
X2 550 @ 3.1
4GB DDR3 1333
320GB WD Caviar @ 7200 rpm
(1:23.5)
Windows 7 64bit Ultimate
Phenom 2 x4 945 @ 3.3ghz
4GB DDR2 800mhz
320GB WD @ 7200 rpm
Probably that high because of it checking DMI before booting up.
1:39.5
16.6 to shut down, 1:22.8 to start.
That's odd, since I thought my PC would be pretty fast.
C2Q9550 @ 4.0
4GB DDR2-971
ASUS Maximus II Formula
2x 1TB in RAID 0
Win7 64
About 15...fresh install of win7 64 bit and a SSD...

around 5 minutes
Vistarr 64-bit

Might want to check into that.
40 seconds in restart, almost 1 minute if I switch the pc off and on
Windows 7 64bit
i5 750 @ 2.66ghz
4gb ddr3 ram
Western Digital blah WD10EAVS, 7200 rpm, 1tb
55 seconds
Win 7 x64
C2Q 2.8GHz
4gb DDR2
Seagate 500gb SATA
And I haven't re-installed/formatted since I first installed Windows 7 about 6 months ago
An absolute fucking age ever since I enabled AHCI, for some reason. Probably over 2 minutes. Lemme grab a stopwatch...

02:03 from clicking Restart to login prompt.
Specs:
Phenom II 3.5 x2(x4 core unlocked)
4GB DDR3
(4870 1GB)
Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB (primary) + Western Digital 80GB + Seagate Barracuda 80gb (the 80gb's are for other OS's)
16 seconds, with a 5 second holdup because it likes to display my video card information.
Linux 2.6.34-rc2 i686
AMD Athlon II X2 @ 3.2 GHz
2 GB DDR3 1333
OCZ 60 GB SSD (on /home, formatted to XFS)
Intel 40 GB SSD (on / and /boot, formatted to jfs and ext2, respectively)
On new 7 install on desktop about 10 seconds. On laptop my stopwatch ran out of digits... Is an old Vista install on a slow old laptop.
