I've tried: Putting it vertical/horizontal Blowing in to the tray Rebooting Changing disc Re-plugging in cables Removing and plugging in hard drive 4 times none have worked
Dunno what this error is (because you are not giving any info) But I am going to presume that your xbox thinks your tray is staying open while it isnt?
sorry about that I put any game in the tray, close it and then it says 'Reading...' and then just says 'Open tray' even though it's closed with a disc in I got halfway through dissembling my xbox to fix it but there were some strange screws in the way so I need to pick up the right screwdriver for it

And im sure you know but ive seen some weird stuff here: this voids warranty if you still had any.
no warranty, 2 years are over what do you mean by try out what causes it?
I meant Find out. No clue why i typed try. Annyways *Fixed*
There's a few tricks you can try, they've worked for me when I had the error: When the disc is spinning, knock on the console. Open the tray and search for a little wheel thing at the bottom. Move this back and forth a bit, the tray should also move a little. When it's open, mash A or the eject button. I don't remember this last one completely, but turn off your console with a disc in it. Boot it up with the eject button, then quickly take the disc out, slam the tray shut, and turn it off again. There's also methods on the internet about opening it up and messing with some of the parts on the inside.
my xbox is half open at the moment do you recommend fuckuppery or just trying the tricks
You will need to replace the laser, You can get a new one for around £7.
Yeah, but don't you need the exact model laser that your xbox has?
my xbox is half open at the moment do you recommend fuckuppery or just trying the tricks
Well, all of the tricks are only temporary. Back when I had the open tray error, I managed to keep playing games for about 6 months with these. After a while, none of them worked anymore, so I just sent it in. If you just want to play a few games every now and then, you might as well use the tricks.
You will need to replace the laser, You can get a new one for around £7.
Whaat does this have to do with the tray message staying on open?
Whaat does this have to do with the tray message staying on open?
When it says "open tray" when there is a disc in the drive, it means the disc cannot be read, and when it happens for multiple games, even ones in perfect condition, the DVD drive is the problem.
or the disc is so totally up-fucked, the laser can't read it as a disc? [editline]6th March 2011[/editline] :downs:
no
OK, go buy a new game and then get a totally fucked up game one will work one will ask you to open the tray.
it doesn't work for any discs no matter how new they are
then your xbox is fucked.
then your xbox is fucked.
I thought it was a staple rule not to post in tech support threads with unhelpful replies
Does your Xbox happens to have a Hitachi drive?
no idea
Use that as a reference or open it up. You'll have to do it eventually to fix this issue anyways.

[editline]7th March 2011[/editline] All I need to fully open it is a TORX 20-bit screwdriver (or 10 bit, I forgot), I've opened it down to the screwed down metal casing at the moment.
snip
Sorry for the bump, but I finally got the right screwdriver and I opened up the disc tray, and there isn't anything visibly wrong. What should I try?
situation at current, removed the disc now and I can see the laser in its normal position nothing LOOKS wrong and the laser looks fairly lasery [editline]14th March 2011[/editline] why does automerge cancel
moved the laser anyway and it works thanks for all help!
^ Was it an Elite? I've fixed several Elites with the open tray error and more often than not, it's as easy as moving the laser into it's original position because if it's too far out there it won't recognize a disc is present or move along the guide rails.

There was some weird mayonnaise gunk shit in there (no idea what it was, no idea how it got there) that I cleaned off, and moved the laser in to the normal position and now it works. I'm not letting my brother use my xbox again. [editline]15th March 2011[/editline] The good side of this is now that if my friends have it, I can do it for them too. Even though compared to many FPers I'm oblivious to the tech world, they still turn to me for things like this.
