Found a pair of IBM Netfinity 7000 M10 servers in my basement!

So about a month ago I moved into a place with a bunch of other people already living here. I FINALLY ventured down to the basement to do some laundry, and in the corner I see two HUGE server boxes, in what seemed to be good shape. I lugged one of them upstairs and plugged it in, and it worked! Currently I can get it into bios, or boot into Damn Small Linux on cd, but that's about as far as it goes.
I'm working on getting internet hooked up to it with xubuntu, and also find the contents of the hard drives.
System specs:
2x Intel Pentium II xeon processors (room for 4, can only get 2 working as of now)
4x SCSI drives of unknown size
2x USB port (neither of which work for my usb mouse)
2x 400W power supplies, I think there is a third but wtf why
120lbs of rackmount awesomeness
will update with progress

wow nice, one lucky SOB
Install redhat and set up apache get a webpage and FTP up
did the people just let you keep those
That machine actually has 3 processors, it only sees two likely because the chipset wants them installed in pairs. But regardless Pentium II Xeons, the fastest they could possibly be are 450 MHz (likely aren't that fast) so you couldn't do much with it.
The only uses I could think for it besides taking up room would be a web server, file server (more unlikely due to limited SCSI space) or a SQL box.
there are four (i took the 4th one out at that time) and only two were being recognized.
It's 400MHz, and after I'm done screwing around on it I'm putting it in the basement, the power consumption makes it not worth it.

they are leftover form tenants long ago
Are those chassi still worth anything?
You might make a few dollars selling them.
Host webpages, make $$$.
The tech crew I'm with just got a donated HP server box on a rack mount with Pentium III. Cleaned it out today (frigging disgusting inside, in fact I found a small nest), hopefully tomorrow I'll fire the thing up. Also a few crates of parts that hopefully still work, and we'll see what it can do.
Holy shit dude what an awesome find, I'd love to have one of those to tinker around with.
i bet pentium is jealous
i bet they're noisy fuckers

He probably has his own.
Is the motherboard underneath a PCI backplane? Looks like they have a huge amount of expansion potential.
Lucky bastard
They won't leave me anything other than shit
Sick deal.
Can you say local porn server?

:q:
keep them
for the love of hardware keep them

My CompTIA A+ teacher brought a similar machine in, 4 P3 Xeons, each at 700mHz, 4GB PC133 and 20GB of hdd space, the thing is a goddamn jet engine when it's on
It's fairly loud with two 120mm fans in the front and two 80mm fans by the hard drive bays, I still haven't pulled it completely apart in fear of breaking it but that will probably happen tonight.
I can't mount the hard drives for the life of me, at least not with D.S.L.

Great movie, but completely unrelated to the thread.
Good find OP, set up a personal SVN or something...
So they GAVE me the donated server I mentioned earlier. Its a bit newer than the OP's, but when we fired it up, it sounded like a jet engine. (drowned out the noise from the 10 or so switches in the room we were using) I'm thinking about maybe a file server or web server or something.
It's got dual Pentium III processors running at 600 MHz each, 1 GB of ram, and a whole bunch of various sized hard drives. I also got 2 crates of parts and cabling with it I get to dig through.

The furthest I've gotten is to where it looks like a command prompt but just says "BUBA". I'm curious how the OP moved his, cause mine weighs as much as a 27" CRT TV.
did you end up keepign them?

OP did you keep te servers?
I have a huge server too. Don't know what the fuck to do with mine. Tried to reinstall Server 2000 but it seems to have pounds of issues.

Has a single P2 450Mhz and I think 128mb of ram. 6 SCSI 10k RPM Barracudas of unknown sizes. 2 300W PSUs, room for 3. And a 72gb tape drive. Oh and fibre connections on the back.

You need the scsi drivers for the install sometimes.
You lucky bastard. That's great and all but whats the point of having such a massive loud thing as a server? I've got a webserver with ssh/ftp/samba/apache and it's small and quiet. It's got 512mb of ram and a Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 1.80GHz processor.

CentOS is free.
[/quote]This is just a really roundabout way of saying it's exactly the same as Red Hat Enterprise Linux minus the Red Hat logos.
I got given this by a friend, its a company write off so it cannot be legally sold, only handed around lol. Use it to host gmod, l4d2, l4d, teamspeak 2 & 3, CSS. There what I have installed atm. Run it during the day. It can manage 300-400+ barrels exploding on gmod before lag and the cpu's hit 80-100%?
Runs Server Ubuntu ... Soon to be Debian when I can be Arsed
2 x 1.4Ghz PIII
3GB Ram
2x 36.4GB SCSI
Also sounds like a jet engine XD
Theres another kicking around but its not a good, bigger and louder.
Sorry about massive images =/
