Right... I have a oldish phone with bluetooth.
It's a nokia 6xxx (sorry, I don't know the other numbers)
As far as I know I can use it as a modem for my laptop, as I'll need to fairly soon... Can this be done via blue-tooth? and if so any special software?
I'll provide more details later if necessary
Thanks in advance
First off, you do have a data plan for the phone, right?
install nokia pc suite, use phone as a modem.
ta-dah!

1:Does the phone support wireless internet?
2:Do you have an internet errr "deal?"with your provider?
yes it does have Internet capablities, I've used it for browsing before, not great, quite slow, but gets the job done. for the main part I'm asking about using it as a modem for my laptop or whatever.

oh, and I can do this on either ubuntu, winxp or win7. If that changes anything
What everyone is saying is that this will cost you an arm and a leg everytime you connect and download images etc unless you have a dataplan that is like £xx for so much data transfered.

This. You could potentially get dinged with ridiculous service charges, $1 per MB or something can seriously hurt when you open up that bill.
I'm not gonna be downloading images, I know the cost
€1 per 50mb.

So you're only going to go to entirely text-based webpages? You're going to have absolutely nothing but the browser running, so that other programs can't use the internet?
well, I'm gonna use opera's no images function to deal with pictures, and I generally don't have much else running
Well, the question is, with that option do they download the images and not show them (which is how most things do it), or do they not get the images at all?
they don't download the pictures at all
Well, I'm not sure I believe that, but in the end it's your money.
What I would do is Google the model of the phone (eg Nokia 6123) and Tether, to see if someone has instructions on how to set it up for your phone.
I've checked, it downloads images only when you have show images on
and I'll probably do that and test it before I go as well
Just a word of warning: You're going to rack up a lot more web usage then you think. I have a Blackberry with an unlimited internet plan, and I tether it to my laptop when traveling. I can fairly easily rack up 50mb of usage in a few minutes with the normal amount of web browsing that I do. You need to be real careful.
Ì know, for the main part, I'm only gonna be accessing my local college's web site

Well, one day I had to use tethering, and with my 1GB/month plan, I had to really keep my traffic low, and I managed to only use ~220 MB in, maybe, 7 hours.

Over here, without a dedicated data plan, I'd pay *at least* 0.24€ for 1mb (with the shittiest provider, that is).
Consider yourself lucky.

I have a BlackBerry Bold on Rogers' prepaid plan, with that you can drop down $3-4 and get 20 MB of data for the day. I was able to use chrome without images and IRC for the entire 5 hour car trip without going over. It's easy to keep under the limit with the images off and if you're using Firefox, noscript would help a lot.
I have a GE Cell Fusion that links to my phone using bluetooth and gives me a phone jack that I can plug a 56K modem into. This way you don't need a data plan and regular call rates will apply.

That could be useful if you list your dialup number in a myFive or whatever the service is called.
