Are there any options besides using a Homegroup or external drive? I'm trying to transfer a bunch of large files between my laptop and my desktop and I can't seem to get the Homegroup working (possibly because the laptop is a lease from my school).
So what's my best option here?
Reinstall a full, non-crippled version of Windows 7 on the laptop, and try again.
Or just use a USB drive.
Besides, I never found Homegroups useful, I just send the files to the PC directly over the network.
If you have a switch setting up a ftp server on one of the computers is probably the easiest. it will work faster than using a USB external harddrive provided you have a 100/100 switch (which you should).

Not really an option right now.
Are you hooking them to each other directly, or through a router?
A million USB's
Router.
Gigabit network.
Or a firewire cable.

you should be able to then go to network and see the other computer. just double click, enter your username and password, and you should have access to all your files.
Remote access (go through router) or transfer cable.
a regular ethernet cable can do the job
disconnect them from the net (or not, but to get it to work I seem to have to), connect them both via ethernet cable, wait for both connections to be 'limited or no connectivity', go into run and type //*nameofcomputeryou'retryingtoconnectto*
works for me

if one computer is running vista or 7 the other computer connected should become visible in Network

and share the files you need to transfer, obviously

TO find out the computers IP, go to the console then type ipconfig
you don't need the IP, just the computer name, for instance //BILLPC

It's \\BILLPC.
dropbox.com
You have to install it on both computers and the files will sync. But, the speed depends on your upload speed.

I'd only use something like that as a last resort... Especially within the same home of both computers..

Dropbox should be able to sync in LAN as well, if it detects other computer in the same network and that option is enabled.
