What are the biggest asshole design moves.
My opinion are the touch sensitive wifi switches, how often do people need to use those.
computers without disk drives. just check out my current thread
The way you cannot immeadiately see which way you have to plug in something into a USB.
The way you cannot immeadiately see which way you have to plug in something into a USB.
I spend forever trying to figure out which side goes up, even in a computer I've used the stick in hundreds of times. It makes me feel all stupid :saddowns:
Computer Speakers without volume knobs and mouses without wheels.
Office 2007.
The way you cannot immeadiately see which way you have to plug in something into a USB.
also applies to many phone chargers
Flash content without volume sliders.
Also, the BTX form factor and Dells gross overuse of it. Speaking of Dell, they seem to take as many measures as they can make upgrading hard.
The last computer I used(the one I'm no right now due to a problem with my motherboard) used the BTX form factor which meant finding a good well-rounded motherboard would be hell. Not to mention the motherboard they had used was a LGA-775 board that was incompatible with the more recent 775 CPUs like higher-end quad-cores and the E8000 series of Core2Duo's.
In the end, I did the right thing, scrapped the idea of trying to make it better and built a new computer from the ground up.
Proprietary connections.
Websites that play really stupid music when you go onto it.
RDRAM.
Shipping motherboards with quad channel floppy controllers, but programming the BIOS to allow one to be used.
At my work (grocery store) there are shopping carts that don't fit into the others these are identified and thrown to the side like a rotten tomato.

You click someplace on the site where there is no content and an add pops. All I wanna do is reselect the window so I can move it back to the screen that's turned on.
[editline]10th March 2011[/editline]
Also windows remembering where to place the window when you open something. It's very annoying when you open something and it appears on a screen that's not even turned on.
Mouses without right click.

From the apple mouse page in the store.
Touch-sensitive top shell
It looks and feels like a sleek one-button mouse, but the Apple Mouse's smooth top shell hides a powerful secret: touch-sensitive technology under the shell detects which part of the mouse you're clicking, so you can both left-click and right-click. And if you prefer the simplicity of a classic one-button mouse, the Apple Mouse is up to the task. Just use the Mac OS X system preference pane to configure it how you want.
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB112LL/B?fnode=MTY1NDA1Mg&mco=MTMzNzYzMzc

Apple adopted the 2 button mouse in 2005.
Fucking Macbooks and the way the microphone is placed.
Why in the love of fuck does it have to be RIGHT NEXT TO THE GODDAMN SPEAKER?!
[editline]10th March 2011[/editline]
I mean, why not next to the webcam? That would make a whole lot more sense

You're of course aware that OS X has built in noise cancelling. It cancels out the speaker sound.
the HP xw6400.
it uses FBDIMMs which are meant to be used in servers with large amounts of RAM slots and costs more for the same performance even though it only has 4 RAM slots.
and the fact that overclocking is disabled.
and oh god the airflow
Shit being upside down or sideways.
Not relevant anymore, but:
Flash. If you fullscreened something on another monitor and then clicked on something on another screen, it would take it out of fullscreen.
They've changed that but it still happens if the Flash object is a Youtube video that is still loading. You have to let it start playing and then click on whatever you actually want to be doing.

Same happens in fullscreen games.

Didn't know that. Well I still miss right click with my Macbook. Not hating on Macs by the way.
Devices that have mass storage with no drag and drop out of the box.
Propriatery connectors aswell.

Right click on those is still utter shit, you have to roll the mouse to the right to get it to click properly, It takes me about 3 attempts on average to get it to click.

And if you get the wire trapped under it you can't click at all.
I hate the Mighty Mouse.

Except you can in iTunes the only problem is if you don't like iTunes I don't know why you would but you're not me and that's fine to. It's because apple follows the law and expects you to not be downloading music illegally and really what other program has as much music to download legally as iTunes?

The point wasn't if it was shitty it was weather it had the right click. The whole mouse is shitty but it does have right click.

I mean drag and drop as it appears as a device inside your OS. not some propriatery program.
iTunes doenst look paticularly nice and it runs horribly for such as simple program.

Countless times I've told my friend to turn down his speakers on his Macbook when I'm talking to him over Skype. I hate it so much.

Remove your finger from the left side of the mouse, click.
It's a fairly nice mouse to use with laptops and if you're doing a lot of scrolling, though I'm not going to use it with my gaming PC any time soon, it's strictly for the iMac and my netbook. The MX518 is sticking with the PC.
To actually contribute to the thread: Weak plastic tabs. Fuck everything about them. It's not so bad with say, a computer case since they're somewhat easy to superglue/epoxy back in place, but on things like cell phones they're tiny as fuck and really tight.
Another stupid design move is for most new laptops. Often, the panels on the bottom aren't really helpful for say, an optical drive cable. Instead of say, removing all the screws on the bottom and have the top come off, you have to pry up a bunch of plastic bits and remove 10 more screws.
I used to have this old PowerBook 150 (From 1993), which had 4 screws on the bottom. Four. After removing those four screws, the bottom would come off and you would have full access to mostly everything.
